New Twin Peaks Possibly Postponed Until 2017 [UPDATE: It’s Officially 2017 Now]

Mark Frost: “We’ve finished the scripts, we start production in September, and that will be coming out on Showtime sometime in 2017.” Wait! WHAT?

LATEST UPDATE (11/3/2015): CBS Corporation, owner of Showtime, has officially confirmed Twin Peaks will air in 2017.

Previously on Welcome to Twin Peaks…

The awful side of managing this wonderful community is deciding when and how to break possible bad news to the fans. Now don’t panic just yet because this comes from a single source, but we might be heading towards another bump in the already winding road back to Twin Peaks.

During a recent visit to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, NY, Mark Frost mentioned that new episodes of Twin Peaks “will be coming out on Showtime sometime in 2017.

This statement of course contradicts Showtime’s big October announcement and David Lynch’s earlier prediction that we’ll see Dale Cooper again in 2016. Mark added that his Twin Peaks book, The Secret Lives of Twin Peaks, will come out in 2016 instead of the earlier disclosed fall 2015 release date.

UPDATE (8/2015): Showtime has removed “in 2016” from the header on the Twin Peaks subpage of their site. While no official confirmation, the update seems to fortify Mark Frost’s statement of the airing being pushed back to 2017.

Twin Peaks coming to Showtime (in 2017?)

From baseballhall.org:

“We had 32 hours back in 1991-92, and with my partner David Lynch we kind of blew open that genre of the nighttime soap and took it in a whole other direction,” Frost said. “A lot of people always look back at Twin Peaks and say that was the start of this explosion we’ve had in good television drama, but we did it in a time when there were still only three networks. The challenge for us is to try and come back and raise the bar above what we did the last time. We’re coming back with season three of Twin Peaks after a 25-year absence. We’ve finished the scripts, we start production in September, and that will be coming out on Showtime sometime in 2017.

Confused by the new information and Mark’s incorrect statement about the original series airing in ’91-’92 (it was ’90-’91), Welcome to Twin Peaks last week reached out to National Baseball Hall of Fame researcher, Bill Francis, who was there during Mark’s visit. Unfortunately, the author of the article confirmed everything the Twin Peaks co-creator said: “I did go back and check my interview, which I taped, and he did indeed say what I transcribed. Whether he misspoke I cannot say.”

Even though we are still in happy expectation of 18 new Twin Peaks episodes directed by David Lynch, a delay of at least several months would be another setback for the fans. An additional attempt to verify the postponed airing and book publication remained unanswered, so let’s hope this article provokes a response from the powers that be. For now, let’s assume it’s an error on Mark’s part, but the fact that the renovation of the Double R Diner still hasn’t started, and actress Sherilyn Fenn‘s remark that none of the female cast members have been offered a deal yet, isn’t exactly comforting.

;( Oh please no….. I’m so hungry for this show. Walking Dead and Game of Thrones are so bleak. I want a genre show with characters who can enjoy a cup of coffee now and then.

  2. Aaron says:

Production takes however long production takes. I understand that unexpected elements can cause delays. As long as all the pieces are still moving, the end result will come to be. A year longer, if that really is the case, won’t be that bad.

  3. tom says:

if so, then the show would lost its ‘see you in 25 years’ magic.

    • J_Brosseau says:

If it starts filming this September as they say, it’s close enough. Besides, the “25 Years Later” scene was filmed for the pilot, so it’s technically past that point now. But whatever, it’s not like Frost/Lynch planned it this way. It’s just that strange coincidence follows Lynch wherever he goes.

      • Rick says:

Doesn’t matter when it was shot, that episode first premiered in ’91, meaning ’91+25=2016. The red lodge was not shown until the second and last season, Which aired in 1991.

    • Mackey says:

      Exactly !!

  4. effron says:

Logistically this makes sense for a show beginning production in September/October. I can wait knowing that it’s well and truly coming from Lynch/Frost.

Betcha anything, if this is true, that they’ll keep the ‘see you in 25 years magic’ by releasing some kind of teaser in 2016 –by teaser I mean some kind of story nugget, not just a trailer of sorts.

    • max says:

Maybe he’s thinking of the back 9 episodes, and those will air in 2017. Wouldn’t be surprised to see a year’s gap in the middle of the 18 episodes.

  5. Arjan Hut says:

    I’m not into the panic.

  6. Happy Person says:

Personally, I do not see any reason to panic. As long as we will see more of Twin Peaks in the future, that is all that matters. If we can wait until 2016, we can surely wait until 2017…

  7. MissTwinPeaks89 says:

As a Twin Peaks fan, to hear that the new season may be delayed until 2017 is somewhat disheartening. But I’d rather have a quality season come out a bit later than have a rushed, poorly done season come out sooner. Let’s all just be thankful that we’re getting a Season 3 in the first place, shall we?

  8. Joey9775 says:

Is it me or does this whole thing seem really badly handled? I understand non disclosure and things like that, but you’d think things like bad negotiations and delays in production would be announced. Has there been anything official besides the original announcement?

    • max says:

The Showtime official page still says 2016. We might just be jumping the gun.

    • Griff says:

No, you’re right – it has been pretty poorly handled all round. All will be forgiven when the (hopefully excellent) new season appears, though.

  9. Arjan Hut says:

    No 2016, No Twin Peaks!

    (To soon?)

  10. Lyxxx says:

I think it’s okay and I can wait. I’m really expecting a high quality damn fine show. So I hope they’ll take their time and surprise us in 2017!

  11. Mathias says:

If they shoot on 35mm, as some unconfirmed rumors have it, I’ll definitely forgive them for not releasing it until 2017. I do think that’s really what I want. I want TP to have that filmic feel.

    • AndyH says:

Absolutely. That filmic feel is what set it apart in 1990 and would set it apart again in 2017. And it’s completely possible for the ‘see you again in 25 years’ to work if they set the next season in 2014/15.

    cooperstown, cooperstown, cooperstown

  13. Ryan J. Reininga says:

It actually makes a lot of sense if they stay with the 25 year ‘intermission’ of sorts between the 2 eras. This way if they release the third season in 2017 they’ll have much more room for interweaving the real world ‘news’ into the show. An ability for more artistic license this way rather than shooting while real time world events unfold parallel to the show. Regardless, I have great expectations for the magik that Mr. Lynch & Mr. Frost are brewing up. For me David Lynch, just like nearly all great artists age like a fine Bordeaux. Just think about all the amazing work Mr. Lynch has produced since Twin Peaks concluded back in 1991. Wild at Heart, Lost Highway and hands down one of the most unique, grounbreaking films ever created Mulholland Drive. A film that was as risqué as Blue Velvet, as dynamic as Wild at Heart and even more dreamy than Lost Highway. As a painter myself, I can totally relate to his method(s) of production drawn from inspiration. Unlike the creative paths taken by most filmakers schooled primarily in roots of photography. And if he’s the meticulous, ever-evolving visual magi I and so many of us believe him to be then I wouldn’t worry one teensy bit about what he’s got percolating. He’s gonna brew us up a big black, dark pot of psychological, imaginative, boundary-dissolving, heart-touching, tear-jerking, gut-wrenchingly humor spiced roast that blends everything we hoped for alongside that which would could have never even conceived!
So in the mean time I’m gonna continue serving coffee and what-have-you to my dearly loved San Francisco brothers and sisters downtown so that they can do whatever it is that they do day-in-day-out to bide our extremely parched imaginations seeking true magik from a true magi. All I know is that it’s gonna be one great, grande and wonderful show. Spooky, serene, special, sleek, sexy, sophisticated, smart, stylish and stupendous!!! See you all again in approximately 25 months ;)))
