David Lynch returns to direct Twin Peaks

Twin Peaks is saved* and David Lynch is back.

(*But beware of BOB!)

After six weeks of rallying to #SaveTwinPeaks and also exactly one year after the Twin Peaks Blu-ray announcement, Twin Peaks fans can finally sleep well and have both wonderful and strange dreams again about that upcoming new season. Wow Bob wow! On a date that reads the same forward and backward, David Lynch and Mark Frost announced that the show is definitely coming to Showtime, despite the “rumors.”

The premium cabler followed the announcement with an official statement from their CEO, David Nevins:

This damn fine cup of coffee from Mark and David tastes more delicious than ever. Totally worth the extra brewing time and the cup is even bigger than we expected. David will direct the whole thing which will total more than the originally announced nine hours. Pre production starts now!!

Banzai! Whether this translates into longer or more episodes, or even an entire extra season is unknown at this point.

In an e-mail to Sherilyn Fenn, who will return as Audrey Horne, the director thanked the cast for playing a major role in making the negotiations successful, and everyone who rallied to save Twin Peaks.

First reactions from the original cast members…

Kyle MacLachlan (Dale Cooper)

Mädchen Amick (Shelly Johnson)

Sherilyn Fenn (Audrey Horne)

Charlotte Stewart (Betty Briggs)

Miguel Ferrer (Albert Rosenfield)

Catherine E. Coulson (The Log Lady)

“I am thrilled that David and SHOWTIME were able to work out a plan so we can make more episodes of Twin Peaks?.” (Source: Hitfix)

  5. Reading David’s e-mails in all caps make me hear them in my head as the voice of Gordon Cole.

  6. Nate says:

Great to see it truly will be a return to “Twin Peaks” and not just “Invitation To Love”.

    In television
    Everything is fine
    You’ve got your good things
    And I’ve got mine

  13. Morgaine says:

    Don’t give a hoot what owls say;
We’ve got DKL to lead the way!
The Lodges open, the Wildwood waits
    As we who watch anticipate:
May the sleeping dwellers in Twin Peaks wake
The game’s afoot, for Pete’s sake!
    Awake, arise, and listen well,
The log is speaking, so Druids foretell.

    • Morgaine says:

Sorry about that, folks. Bad poetry is a failing of mine…

To put it plainly, we’re relieved and delighted to hear that things are back on track and that Showtime finally got their heads on straight.

Congratulations, and we look forward to enjoying the fruits of your labours in the very near future!

  14. When you see me again it won’t be me.

  15. Frank says:

Such great news! Thank you to all that made this happen. And let nothing ever threaten it’s future existence again.

  16. Morgaine says:

Awefully quiet here… Any owls lately?

  17. Twin Peaks: The Return was the finest, most original and visionary programme I’ve seen since the original Twin Peaks.

It can be hard to look in the mirror, especially as one gets older, and the warped image of America peering back at me through Mr. Lynch’s dark glass gave me the willies precisely because I do recognise it. We all do. But now, at least, we’re all considering and discussing it, which means we may still have a chance to change the final outcome.

In the end, these are the messages I take from the final episode:
    (1) Some things are meant to be, even if we don’t understand why, and even if they break our hearts.
    (2) We can’t save other people from themselves; even angels must learn from their mistakes to make better choices.
    (3) Our beliefs shape our actions, and our actions shape reality.
    (4) We must each re-examine our choices and reclaim our humanity.
    (5) A living story has no ending.

I take courage from the fact that so many people still have enough heart to stick with this series and try to unravel its meaning; I take hope from the fact that it may start a dialogue which could lead to insight, and potentially real transformation and change. In the end, this is what makes great art, great: it changes us by enhancing our ability to see ourselves, and our true potentials for evil and for good.
