Dale’s Quest, A Vintage Twin Peaks Adventure Game Ad

A vintage magazine ad for Dale's Quest, the Twin Peaks adventure game that never existed.

In a previous post titled “If There Were A Twin Peaks Video Game“, I coined the idea of an early 90s adventure game called Dale’s Quest, comparable to the popular King’s Quest and Police Quest series from back in the days. In this game, you’d have to guide Special Agent Dale Cooper through “a place both wonderful and strange” using a straightforward text command interface, and discover clues in order to score points out of a maximum of 315.

One thing led to another, and I created this faux vintage magazine ad for Dale’s Quest as if it were an actual game by Ken and Roberta Williams of Sierra On-Line fame. I can already imagine the sequel: Dale’s Quest 2 – Inside The Black Lodge

By the way, some details got lost in image compression. For those wondering, the text commands in the tiny screenshots are “ask sheriff about trees”, “enter waiting room”, “pause video”, and “examine fingernails.”

Big Sierra fan here– Played the hell out of the King’s Quest & Police Quest series, among the other gems they put out back in the day. I LOVE THIS. SO HARD.

There is actually a game that was based on Twin Peaks called “Deadly Premonition”. The folks who programmed it were not willing to talk to David Lynch or anyone about licensing for a Twin Peaks game,so it basically just rips it off. The game itself is positively atrocious, do not buy it under any circumstances, it’s just not worth it. The gameplay, graphics, framerate, story, characters, dialouge, level designs, and sound mixing make it a chore to even comprehend playing. Everything is incredibly poorly done. Does this deserve to be associated with out beloved Twin Peaks? Certainly not. But it is.

I have to desagree with the comment over this. Deadly Premonition pay homenage to Twin Peaks, but it don’t stop there. It got the murder of a prom college girl, yes, it got a town full of mysteries, yes, it got a surreal and psychological feel to it, yes indeed. The coincidences (and anothers obvious quirks like the Pot-lady) end there. This game has its own personality. It is a plot story driven game, full of significatives details to a movie and game fanatic. I don’t know what games do you play usually but, for me, a veteran gamer of 63 years, one who saw the evolution of gaming, i can tell you, this game is art, you can’t find another game like this one. Closer call will be L.A. Noire, and is rad diferent thematically. So many people say Deadly Premonition’s graphics are from the last generation of consoles, and yes, that is, totally on purpose. This game pay homenage to the good old survival horror games like Silent Hill 2, Resident Evil 4, Fatal Frame 2, and much more. They don’t have graphics that make your head explode or anything out of this world. They where good ”beyond” the graphics. They were rich in story and gameplay. Just like this gem. Possibly it have some fails, but even our great Lynch-ian wonder have many…and this game, just like our beloved serie have the same feeling. Humanity. Too much i will say. Play it all. Its all i can recommend you. Just like Twin Peaks, that have people taht hate it. I say the same to them. Watch it all.
