After years of debunked rumors, the Giant and Ray Wise were right after all: it is happening again.
And unlike the owls, last Friday’s mysterious Twin Tweets were exactly what they seemed.
YES, TWIN PEAKS IS GOING TO COME BACK IN STYLE!
Approximately 25 years later, David Lynch and Mark Frost will be revisiting the wonderful and strange town of Twin Peaks. And we’ll be able to witness the fruits of that trip, as rumored earlier, on premium cable network Showtime. But we’ll have to be more patient than Dale Cooper ordering room service, because the brand new show is set to premiere in 2016 which is 25 years after the final “How’s Annie?” cliffhanger episode aired. UPDATE: Showtime will schedule the entire 1990-1991 series in the months leading up the big premiere.
UPDATE: Since this news broke, Mark Frost has said in one interview that he expects the show to return in 2017 instead of 2016.
“The mysterious and special world of Twin Peaks is pulling us back. We’re very excited. May the forest be with you.”
—David Lynch and Mark Frost
Details are still rolling in like two-by-fours at the Packard Mill, but David Lynch and Mark Frost will start shooting a new, 9-episode series in 2015. Set in present day Twin Peaks, they’re trying to bring back as much of the original cast as possible with Kyle MacLachlan definitely on board reprising his role as Special Agent Dale Cooper. Composer Angelo Badalamenti and Emmy Award-winning editor Duwayne Dunham will likely be involved as well.
UPDATE: Here’s Kyle MacLachlan semi-confirming his casting. Read some other first reactions from the original Twin Peaks cast here.
Better fire up that percolator and find my black suit 🙂 #Twinpeaks

The timing for a revival couldn’t be better. If you’ve been reading Welcome to Twin Peaks for the past four years, it should be obvious that both fan and mainstream interest in Twin Peaks is at an all-time… peak. Sure, “that gum” we like has never really gone out of style, but it sure is in high demand right now. And not just because of the release of the Twin Peaks Blu-ray.
For those concerned that new episodes will look like David Lynch’s latest film Inland Empire without the warm tones and grain of the original series, the director proclaimed his love for film again at the Lucca Film Festival last week. A sentiment which, by the way, overwhelmed him while working on The Missing Pieces from Fire Walk with Me:
“For a long time I championed digital. I fell in love with digital in building a website, and that carried into Inland Empire. And recently, I was working on the deleted scenes from Twin Peaks. For the first time in a long time I saw images shot on film. And I was overwhelmed by the depth and the beauty that celluloid and film can give. It has such a depth and such a beauty.”
I can’t believe I’m even typing all this and I’m expecting my hair to turn white any minute. But this is going to be a great ride, everyone! And Welcome to Twin Peaks will be here for you to cover it all. If you haven’t done so, please follow @ThatsOurWaldo on Twitter and Welcome to Twin Peaks on Facebook.

Thank you for posting this at exactly 11:30AM!
Well spotted, James!
Are there ways to watch Showtime TV shows without cable? I don’t have cable and don’t want it but it goes without saying that I will want to watch these shows immediately!
Probably iTunes and Amazon. It’s possible Showtime will be offering an online only subscription by 2016.
Was a big fan when it first came out had secret dairy of Laura palmer book, agent Cooper Tapes and anything I could get involving twin peaks which wasn’t easy beeping in Australia, great to hear Lynch directing all eps as he has a vey special vision ,hope they go back to original locations from the pilot to get that look that you can’t get from shooting on a stage , can’t wait for 2016
awww shit . looin forward to this.
Ok, this is how it’s going to be: Cooper is freed from BOB. BOB is no longer a man in jeans and grey hair, he’s now a man in a suit and tie, looking exactly like a 60 years old Leland Palmer. And the white lodge has sent an angel to help those hunted by him, and she looks exactly like a 40 year old Laura Palmer. What else?
Heard someone else make this prediction too, and I like it. It would be a great way of extending the point Lynch was making in FWWM, that Leland and Bob are not such completely distinct entities as we were led to believe. (Haven’t heard the Laura idea, but I like that too and was kind of leaning in that direction myself – I have to believe Laura and Sheryl Lee will both play important roles in the film).
However, I don’t think Cooper will be freed from Bob. That would feel too much like a cop-out and short-circuit a lot of interesting dramatic avenues.
So excited!!!
This is insanely great news.
A damn fine cup of news!
It’s been hours since this news break the internet but to be honest i still feel like i’m in a dream. Getting a revival after 25 years seems so surreal. I just can’t believe it. This was beyond my craziest dreams.
I’ve had plenty of them before and I hope i dream a Twin Peaks nightmare again tonight.
At least BOB won’t return in that very same form. Frank Silva (BOB actor) died on 13 September 1995, aged 45, from complications of HIV.
David should get Lana Del Rey to not only sing, but be the star of the new episodes.
An obvious Perfect fit.
LOL no. This show tends to hire people with talent, so she doesn’t fit at all.
Ouch! lol…
Lana Del Rey is incredibly talented as a writer and a singer. Ultraviolence sounded very David Lynch-esque. Beach House would be great as well, but I’d love to see Julee Cruise back.
Negative. Beach House needs to do some music along with Badalamenti. I would faint if even Lana del Rey’s finger nail got involved.
Wow! Just…wow!
In the 25 years that have passed since Twin Peaks ended, BOB has used Agent Cooper’s doppelganger as a means to spread his influence nationwide. He has deliberately botched the criminal investigations Cooper was assigned to solve, allowing murderers across the country to go free, and committed a series of his own murders as well — including the “Diane” Agent Cooper spoke to on his tape recorder so often, who would have figured out that the imposter wasn’t really Cooper. But BOB knows his time is running out: The “25 years” to which Laura Palmer alluded in the Season 2 finale is one of the ironclad rules of the Black Lodge, and the “Agent Cooper” doppelganger (Kyle MacLachlan) will be sent back to the Black Lodge as soon as the real Agent Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan, again) is freed. BOB returns to Twin Peaks as Agent Cooper re-emerges, chooses a new vessel, and begins committing a series of a murders that eerily recall the killings in the original series — positioning the real Agent Cooper as Suspect No. 1 in the eyes of the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Department.
Agent Cooper would emerge from the purgatorial Black Lodge forever changed. He’d have to be; he’s just spent the past 25 years sitting in an upholstered red chair, fully aware that his doppelganger is unleashing anarchy upon the world and helpless to do anything about it. We don’t need to see Agent Cooper growling, “Does it look like I give a damn?” when someone asks if he’d like his coffee black, and the quirky detours into dating, whittling, and local real estate would be gone. This Agent Cooper would emerge from the Black Lodge with a singular purpose: Eliminate BOB and his brand of evil from the world once and for all.
Of course, Cooper would need a partner: Someone who’s spent the past 25 years in the real world, and who could help him navigate a place that has become all but unrecognizable between 1991 and 2016. So he calls his staunchest ally — Sheriff Harry S. Truman — and asks him to meet at the Double R Diner for a cup of coffee and a slice of cherry pie. But Harry isn’t the same man; in fact, he isn’t even a sheriff anymore. We saw Harry Truman (Michael Ontkean) hit the bottle pretty hard after the death of love interest Josie Packard (Joan Chen), and the bizarre events he endured in the Season 2 finale pushed him over the edge for good. Shortly after “Agent Cooper” left Twin Peaks, Sheriff Truman retired from the force and took up a new gig as a full-time alcoholic. By the time Twin Peaks resumes, Truman has convinced himself that the strange events in Glastonberry Grove never happened — and it takes the re-emergence of the real Agent Cooper to renew his desire to avenge Josie’s death.
The alcoholic, unstable Truman was forced out of office years ago by his former allies in the department, who now work under the new sheriff: Bobby Briggs (Dana Ashbrook), who fulfilled his father’s “vision” by marrying Shelly Johnson and “living a life of deep harmony and joy” as the man whose primary responsibility is keeping the peace in Twin Peaks. Bobby would be the unlikely new hero of the new Twin Peaks as predicted by the Generals vision: Atoning for his hell-raising past — drug-dealing, an adulterous affair — forgiving himself for his role in Laura’s deterioration, following in the footsteps of Harry in the original series, and serving as both adversary and ally to Agent Cooper.
Audrey Horne (Sherilynn Fenn), Agent Cooper’s admirer, never left Twin Peaks. Instead, Audrey has officially taken over management of the Great Northern Hotel, working under Catherine Martell (Piper Laurie) after severing her relationship with her father Ben (Richard Beymer). She’s also a wheelchair user due to the blast in the bank vault, which permanently killed her dreams of escaping the town. (As a bonus, this also hearkens back to Twin Peaks’ obsession with doubles, recalling Donna Hayward’s wheelchair-using mother, who had an affair with Audrey’s father).
As for the rest of the show’s sprawling cast, in brief: Annie Blackburn (Heather Graham) is back in the monastery, deeply scarred from her experience in the Black Lodge; the widowed Catherine Martell is the town’s most successful businesswoman; Shelly Briggs (Madchen Amick) owns and runs the Double R Diner, which she took over when Norma Jennings moved away; Donna Hayward (Lara Flynn Boyle) lives a peaceful, quiet life in town; Big Ed (Everett McGill) still runs the Gas Farm; and Deputies Andy Brennan (Harry Goaz) and Hawk (Michael Horse) work alongside Sheriff Briggs, lending the expertise they gained during the Laura Palmer murder investigation. There’s a widespread, unspoken understanding that no one ever mention the universally hated James (James Marshall).
A final major rule I’d insist on playing by: No recasting characters, including those played by actors who have passed away since Twin Peaks went off the air. (Moira Kelly’s disastrous turn as Donna in 1992’s Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me is more than enough reason not to try.) BOB (Frank Silva) can be played by a series of “vessels” that he possesses. Pete Martell (Jack Nance) died in the bank vault blast. From a storytelling perspective, the biggest loss is Maj. Garland Briggs (Don S. Davis), who seemed best-positioned to help the real Agent Cooper escape the Black Lodge. But the character’s inability to save the real Cooper from the Lodge — right up to his own death — would help to illustrate the utter futility of Cooper’s situation, and the malevolent brilliance of BOB’s master plan, which had really been about capturing Agent Cooper from the very beginning of the series.
And Leo is still in Windom Earle’s cabin, gripping that thread with his teeth after 25 years…
This feels like a really legitimate take. But I think this will be half the story, the other half being the new-teens and their relationship to the next crime/series of crime. The new-teens relate to the story through the death of one of their own, and part of the mystery they uncover over the course of the show runs parallel and intersects with what we know of the old characters and their relation to the mythology.
I think maybe feature length premiere with a focus on Dale/dopple-BOB. Possibly committing the inciting crime, which would be horrible (in a good way) and really a natural continuation. Honestly they could go any direction with this and find a way to make it work well. “I’ll see you again in 25 years” might mean we don’t see Good Dale out of the lodge/free of BOB until the end of season three, and only at the cost of his life, like Leland.
-I was thinking scar for Audrey, but an injury requiring a wheelchair works very well in this twinning world.
-I think Annie may also be a doppleganger though. I guess it depends on how you interpret the owl ring.
-Bobby as Sheriff makes too much sense not to happen. I don’t think they’ll get Ontkean to come back though.
This is wonderful – I am so excited. I love that the original actors are coming back. Will it just start 25 years later or is it possible to have some way of tying up the cliffhangers from that last episode and then leading into the present?
Is Nadine still alive in this vision of the future? Perhaps she got rich off those silent drape runners after all… 🙂
Dear Mr. Lynch, if you are still looking for an unknown “actor” I am your man. I’m completely unknown and I’m 25 years older now too. I don’t see how this project will work without Mr. Nance but you are the man with the vision, and the show must go on. I doubt you ever see this, but if you do, thank you for everything. The world needs your insight.
PS I hope you have Mr. Badalamenti on board. I really love his style.
25 years later…
So if Major Brigg’s dream comes true, Bobby will hopefully restore TP to it’s former position as White Lodge and rescue Coop from the Black Lodge (maybe not though, as Hawk said facing your doppelganger in the Black Lodge would annihilate your soul and Annie told Laura Coop was trapped and couldn’t leave).
Do you think there’ll be some opportunity for Diane to be replaced by an iPhone? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4wh_mc8hRE
Wonder whether the new series will be presented in 4:3 aspect ratio like the original series or 16:9, like most modern shows? Would be quite unique if it retained the original 4:3 format!
Wow, Bob, Wow!
Please just don’t let the last scene (sorry, no spoilers, but any who have seen will understand) of Dexter prefigure a crossover between the two shows….
Especially since Dexter was far more about indulging prurience for no purpose.
Are you kidding? that is my wildest TV dream… no better place for Dexter Morgan than Twin Peaks! 😀
I think the new series will start with Dale Cooper sitting in a mental institution or something like that.
I am seriously excited and weeping openly that Twin Tweets was exactly what I (and honestly speaking, we all) had hoped for!! Thank you, David Lynch and Mark Frost!! I can’t wait to see the return cast and to finally be old enough to watch it on television for real this time!! (I remember it being on but I was 4 and 5 when it aired, so I never got to see it until I was much older)
I AM SO EXCITED!!! Thank you, welcometotwinpeaks.com for covering this, I can’t wait to read all the stories leading up to the premiere!!!
They may have enough creepy mirror footage of Silva to edit in? Or would that cheapen it?
Nice to hear that they, the producers of Twins Peaks old & new, are thinking in terms of “standards.” However, their association with Showtime is more than a little bothersome. Are these eternal, universal standards, or standards from 25 years ago, or today’s pseudo-standards? The original Twin Peaks (like the later Breaking Bad) worked because at its core was a reliance upon traditional values of right and wrong, good and evil, honorable and shameful. If the original Twin Peaks were filmed now, we wouldn’t be allowed to see the visceral sadness, the mourning in the eyes of the “new girl” at One-eyed Jacks because that would be “slut shaming.” Cooper would have fucked Audrey without a second’s hesitation, and by the end of the first season, they would be completely bored with each other. Ben Horne would be the show’s hero, along with BOB, and the Bookhouse Boys would be shown as naive, redneck buffoons worthy of ridicule. I can’t bear the thought that the new Twin Peaks will endorse and reflect the current level of cynicism, selfishness, dishonesty, narcissism and pornographic degeneracy that is intrinsic to contemporary culture. Heaven knows, I can’t tell where the hell Lynch is coming from these days. I used to argue that the original Twin Peaks was, in fact, a feminist work because it presented a deeply flawed girl as nevertheless a beloved child of God, and gave her murder the attention it warranted, instead of writing her off as the Dead Blonde of the Week. But, then, Lynch signed on to Camp Polanski. Which is it, David? Are you pro-rape or against it? Do you believe girls are human? Do you believe the people’s laws matter? Do you believe evil must be stopped, and that those who commit evil acts must do penance and make acts of atonement? If so, why haven’t you done everything you can to persuade Polanski to turn himself in? Not only for the sake of the parents and girls of the U.S., but for the sake of his own soul?
I have no doubt that Frost & Lynch can churn out artsy, chic surrealism that will make Showtime, in all its sleazy cynicism, happy, but can they still make something sane, ethical, heroic, and worth watching? We’ll see.
(And, if Audrey’s not a Bureau Chief in the FBI, there’s just no point in doing this at all…)
I look forward to the revival, primarily because of nostalgia. Many fond memories of eating donuts and drinking coffee at one of the many “Twin-Peaks” parties in the Miami area back in the early nineties. However, I don’t expect much from this new TP with regards to its artistic importance. To this very day, whenever we watch a TV program or film where the writing is super loose and the plot going absolutely nowhere, we jokingly ask the question, “Did David Lynch have something to do with this show”?
A big snub to those who panned and hated FWWM (all critics), which was a great horror flick with a fantastic score. And to all those who left TP just as it was getting started–it should of run 6-7 seasons. New generations have discovered TP too bad we had to wait so long. Without network stupid I’m sure Lynch and Frost will not disappoint.
What I find really odd is that a lot of the actors appear not to have aged a day since the original.
windom earle is a must return …. I havent heard this but he is still large and in charge in the movie/cinema world…. that would be the better way to go… take coop to the white lodge and extract the evil and windom earle is out there now with the bob spirit….
it would be nice for people like heather graham to not want $1,000,000
I Mean if she really was worth money to begin with then she would give back to the show that helped shape her… but i know thats not on a celebritys Care list…
I think the town should have tried to bury the incidents of the Palmer murder and those surrounding it. The teens of the town would uncover the towns bloody and bizarre past just in time to reignite BOB’s interest in twin peaks thus creating the 25 year loop hole freeing Dale in order to defeat or help defeat BOB as his light opposed opposite as well as clearing his name and ending BOB and his evil from the world.
I’m damned pleased. This won’t be a Prisoner-like abomination, clearly. D. Lynch seems too principled for that. And just for that, I’m going to hunt down some of his coffee. I’ve seen it here in TO. If it’s still in that shop…
Yes !
Danny Trejo would be a perfect BOB: credible in appearance and demeanor. I realize BOB’s evil spirit could appear in various vessels (and the character has to be addressed because of Cooper’s possession), but, if a visual were required, for a flashback or a new possession, Trejo could fit seamlessly. I, for one, would love to see that happen.
Erp
Please film a scene at Boxley’s!
Please, please do some filming at Boxley’s! A Twin Peaks restaurant scene with a jazz background would be awesome!
Saw them filming in north bend wa today!
I grew up in that town and eventually moved to the mountains nearby…the entire story is true to form of that whole town and valley.
Saw them filming today…and they are repainting the double R.
Twin peaks today is exactly a mirror of our reality. May the force of Coopurr overcome his arc nemesis duality and escape the black box. I know he well.
BTW…there is a giant clue between the twin peaks.(there’s always debate over what mountains are the twin peaks. Truly they are in your face. Can’t miss em) When driving east on 1-90before north bend or east down north bendway, there is an X that marks the blind spot. There is a granite mine there.
Oh, and the Snoqualmie tribe are the people of the moon. Snoqualmie 222 North bend 888. And trust me, the owls there are definitely not what they seem
What’s interesting for me is that David Lynch gave the news exactly on my birthday, 5th of April and I consider it as a birthday gift 😉
I am beyond exited . I have and always will have what some might call an ” unhealthy obsession ” with this show.
From the words ” She’s dead. Wrapped in plastic ” to ” how’s Annie “. I cannot count the times I’ve watched every episode over and over. I can’t put my finger on what it is about Twin Peaks that I love so much. It’s just the great cast , the dialogue , the music… It all just works . It has from day one made me feel like I belong there..,hard to explain.
25 years later and the soundtrack to Twin Peaks and Fire Walk With Me , is still my most played iTunes songs.
I hope it stays true to the characters and manage to keep the magic from before.
I don’t want a ” Phantom menace ” thing with a ” JarJar ” fiasco .
My friend is a musician like Bob. I think he could play in the new series
In a new movie with Lou Diamond Phillips portraying a serial killer Richard Ramirez I was astonished how much Lou looks like BOB or it could be his new version! Incredible…
Spoiler alert!
I left a negative comment that was disappeared. That wasn’t classy.
I accidentally saw the first half of the finale before the second half. Anyway, We finally got Cooper back – only to lose him again in some fashion. I didn’t like that. But, the trip was still fun. I don’t care for the draggy watching paint dry technique, but, that aside, the fun stuff was fun, despite my initial short, angry reaction (before seeing the first half of the finale). Thanks David!
Thanks for your feedback, Arby. By the way, you left your first comment on a different post. It’s still there. https://welcometotwinpeaks.com/news/twin-peaks-finale-titles/#comment-163161
