“I spill coffee on a piece of paper and the vision takes shape… I draw anything I see until it’s all out of my mind and I can work on other projects with a more conscious approach.”
Carolina Maggio developed a fascinating (and aroma-rich) method of “cleaning the filter” of her mind using coffee stains and grounds. The Milan-born and London-based artist tells Welcome to Twin Peaks it’s her way of keeping her art real, meaningful, and free from the clouded eye of the subconscious mind. So when Carolina found out one her main inspirations and role models is just as obsessed with coffee as she is, it made perfect sense to apply her peculiar technique and depict David Lynch‘s “visions” using, what else, David Lynch Signature Cup coffee. Lots of it. There is after all “an idea in every bag.”
“Coffee is part of the art life. I don’t know quite how it works, but it makes you feel really good and it serves the creative process. It goes hand in hand with painting for sure.”
—David Lynch
Carolina’s experiment took five hours nonstop and was turned into a time-lapse video by Daniel Lucas of Lazy Eye Productions. While working on her tribute, the artist tells WTTP, she felt closer to David Lynch than she’d ever been.
“I tell you, I hope [David Lynch] will see it and will allow me to create the next commercial for his coffee. It would be a dream come true.”
“I Only Have Time for Coffee” by Carolina Maggio
Watch a time-lapse of a Twin Peaks themed David Lynch portrait by Carolina Maggio made with David Lynch’s own brand of coffee. The video was made by Daniel Lucas and the song is by Jonah Lisa. You’ve seen it here first!
