There was hardly any music in the 3rd season premiere of Twin Peaks and the lack of Angelo Badalamenti‘s jazz shuffle in certain scenes felt awkward to say the least. Maybe that’s why many of us were blown out of our seats when, about 20 minutes into Part 1, this raw song kicks in to introduce someone we’ve last seen laughing maniacally in front of a mirror.
In an abrupt cut from Lucy Brennan (né Moran) to the passenger’s view from a car driving through the woods at night, a stomping beat with slowed-down vocals on top is the perfect setup for the revelation of Mr. C, Dale Cooper’s long-haired and havoc-raising doppelgänger. This guy is clearly not someone to mess with.
I know my worth and who I am
Mister if you’re hard up, I can spare a few grand
Hell will freeze over and I’ll be damned
‘Fore I take orders from any ol’ man
The track we’re hearing in that scene is an unreleased David Lynch remix of “American Woman” by the Nashville-based Muddy Magnolias. The originally dubbed ‘Piney Woods Remix’ will be included on the upcoming Twin Peaks soundtrack, but for now, YouTube user OrphanDoritos did us a great service by slowing down the original and basically recreating a full-length version of the remix.
UPDATE: Here is David Lynch’s official remix as included on the Twin Peaks 2017 soundtrack, followed by several fan remakes and the original song. The new season includes plenty more slowed-down music including Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata and David Lynch’s own songs.

Muddy Magnolias – American Woman (Lyrics)
Bring the bacon and I’ll put it in the pan
Got my own, baby, life is grand
Every move I make is just a part of my plan
And I do it just because you said I can’t
Do I look like
The step-and-fetch type?
I’m a whole lotta grown-ass American woman
Do I look like
The walk-all-over-me type?
I’m a whole lotta strong-ass American woman
I know my worth and who I am
Mister if you’re hard up, I can spare a few grand
Hell will freeze over and I’ll be damned
‘Fore I take orders from any ol’ man
Do I look like
The step-and-fetch type?
I’m a whole lotta grown-ass American woman
Do I look like
The walk-all-over-me type?
I’m a whole lotta strong-ass American woman
I’m a whole lotta, show stopper
Mississippi, New York City, you better treat me proper
I’m a whole lotta, you gotta
Recognize a real-ass woman, if you can’t, don’t bother
I’m a whole lotta, show stopper
Mississippi, New York City, you better treat me proper
I’m a whole lotta, you gotta
Recognize a real-ass woman, if you can’t, don’t bother
To all my headstrong women
Single mamas with the children
Three jobs and something to prove
Go along and work your way through school
Don’t let ’em put you in a corner
‘Cause it’s a new world order
You’re a star, you’re under strife
Make ’em salute you like a flag on the fourth of July
(Make ’em salute you like a flag on the fourth of July)
I’m a whole lotta, show stopper
Mississippi, New York City, you better treat me proper
I’m a whole lotta, you gotta
Recognize a real-ass woman, if you can’t, don’t bother
I’m a whole lotta, show stopper
Mississippi, New York City, you better treat me proper
I’m a whole lotta, you gotta
Recognize a real-ass woman, if you can’t, don’t bother
I’m a whole lotta grown-ass American woman
Fantastic!
He’s doing more than slowing it down. There’s loops and noise in there too.
And just a little reverb.
Lynch into that chopped and screwed…
Thanks for this — I was presuming it was a Fever Ray song I’d never heard and was scrambling around trying to find it.
Still loving this introduction to Mr. C. The portion of these lyrics used say so much more about the scene & character than the music itself, which probably has a lot to do with its abstraction. That & just making it sound so damn eerie!
long live DJ Screw!!!!!
This song is just so damn perfect for introducing Mr. C!!!! LOVE IT!
