Months after Blue Velvet’s theatrical release in the U.S., Dennis Hopper reprised his role as the ultraviolent Frank Booth when hosting Saturday Night Live on May 23, 1987.
In the skit, Lumberton’s black leather jacket-wearing villain hosts a game show called “What’s That Smell?” in which contestants are asked to inhale and identify specific odors. Of course, Frank welcomes contenders Robin Leach (Dana Carvey), Tammy Faye Bakker (Jan Hooks) and Judd Nelson (Jon Lovitz) to the Blue Velvet-curtained studio by saying: “Hi neighbors, you wanna go for a joyride?”
Despite all the brushed up language, Dennis Hopper kills it. Oh, and the musical guest that SNL episode? Roy “In Dreams” Orbison!

“I’ll freak anything that moves!”
* “Let’s fuck! I’ll fuck anything that moves!”
If you’re going to quote Frank, do it properly.
This was Saturday Night Live. Frank wasn’t allowed to swear as he does in Blue Velvet, therefore he said freak and not f**k.
I’m kind of surprised that Blue Velvet was “pop culture” enough to make it on to SNL…
Ripe garmonbozia.
