UPDATE: The book has been renamed and is officially titled The Secret History of Twin Peaks. It will be released on 10/18/2016.
They’re filled with secrets!
In another surprise move by one half of the show’s creators, Mark Frost announced today that he has been working on a Twin Peaks novel called The Secret Lives of Twin Peaks that reveals “what happened to the people of that iconic fictional town since we last saw them 25 years ago.” The book also offers “a deeper glimpse into the central mystery that was only touched on by the original series.”
“This has long been a dream project of mine that will bring a whole other aspect of the world of Twin Peaks to life, for old fans and new. I couldn’t be more thrilled.”
—Mark Frost
The book, published by Flatiron Books, will go on sale late 2015 in 2016, before the new Twin Peaks episodes on Showtime in, assumably, 2017. The Secret Lives of Twin Peaks has also been picked up worldwide: in the United Kingdom (Pan Macmillan), Finland (Otava), Italy (Mondadori), Brazil (Companhia das Letras) and Germany (Kiepenheuer & Witsch). UPDATE: More foreign editions are expected.
Keep an eye on Welcome to Twin Peaks for more details about The Secret Lives of Twin Peaks by Mark Frost, due in 2016.
This will be the fourth official tie-in book after The Secret Diary Of Laura Palmer (1990) by Jennifer Lynch (Amazon), The Autobiography of F.B.I. Special Agent Dale Cooper: My Life, My Tapes (1991) by Scott Frost (Amazon) and Twin Peaks: An Access Guide to the Town (1991) by David Lynch, Mark Frost and Richard Saul Wurman (Amazon). Also check out Mark Frost’s previous books over at Amazon.
From the press release:
Well this clearly means we are going to be getting a all new story line, this gives further credence to the 4chan anon leak whereas he stated the new mystery will revolve around new characters, one being a female investigative reporter.
an
I’m confused. Is this something he had already written and will ignore the new timeline? Surely this is not a book that they will follow when writing episodes for the new season in 2016.
Also if the anon leak is correct and the storyline will revolve around new characters then why would they be signing up so many of the old cast?
Maybe the new characters are in the book, not the revived series?
This to be sounds like very bad news, and the first disappointment since the announcement.
So they wont be going from S2 to S3 like we were all excited about seeing, but will first plug a lot of gaps via a novel.
Not only will this dampen the big moment of the return (anything will no longer be possible – we will know too much), but it also has the whiff of a measure of defeat.
What “anon leak” (concerning the female investigative reporter) are you talking about? Where can I find a source to that rumour? Didn’t find anything when I googled it.
Someone who claimed to have been in on a meeting with David Lynch and some NBC executives, posted the following plot points to 4chan:
– Season 3 is set the same amount of time since it has been since season 2
– David Lynch wants to be very hands on with the project but the executives were very open about how “unusual” his tastes were. They seemed a little on edge about him tackling it alone.
– Lynch wants most of the cast back.
– The story would revolve around the fact that good Cooper is still in the lodge, and a young (female!) reporter will basically uncover the truth behind Twin Peaks, BOB, and the Lodge.
– Since season 2, bad Cooper has been in prison in another state for the murder of two Twin Peaks residents. He didn’t know which ones yet. It seems since season 2, bad Cooper went on a rampage. Everyone still thinks it’s the real Cooper.
– Lynch was adamant that the show opens by recreating the first Red Room scene from season 1. This takes place in modern day, and was a hint that Cooper would be trapped within the Red Room.
I actually like the whole reporter plot. Sounds badass!, but will it be set in 1990 still? Or is this modern day?
Modern day – I’ll see you again in 25 years (2016)
NBC is not involved – maybe they had meetings with lynch but it’s a showtime show
(Mercifully)
Right! would be funny if she is an NBC reporter though. Nice easter egg for some.
Is there a chance we can now push for the Audiobook of Laura’s diary read by Sheryl since there is a clear market for this stuff? TP is making a comeback so there’s no question they won’t see a ROI.
I freaking LOVE THIS IDEA! Im sure she would do it, she seems very dedicated 2 David & Laura!
Will the book be required reading before season three or can we read it after watching the show? I don’t mind either, but if any surprises are lost by reading the book first, or if I would be lost watching the show if I did not read it first, either could ruin the expereince.
Well, just ffck off!
Laura Dern as the reporter. Sold
This push back is a major disappointment… but I suppose if it takes more time to perfect it all than they first thought then I suppose I would rather have a postponed perfect release rather than a rushed earlier one.
I have to echo Tom’s comment, I hope there are no mini spoilers in the book that would taint any surprises in the upcoming Season 3. But surely they wouldn’t be that stupid… would they?
It’s frustrating that the dates are pushed back, but if it means a better show, then I’m all for it. I had assumed the book might close up some storylines and portray the dates of characters who won’t be important in the new season (explaining, for example, the death of Pete Martell). Much of the first two seasons was constantly throwing out pointless “clues” and mysteries, only some of which mattered. And perhaps the new book will do that too; in other words, it could be a warmup for fans to get us percolating in wonder, without being absolutely necessary to people who just watch the new season. And if the book is crucial, then that’s fine with me, cuz I’ll be reading it!
As for the date pushback, Frost said they really wanted this to be a bound-breaking landmark like the beginning. Although CGI would seem really un-Lynch-like, I’m wondering if they’ll be spending an extra year to perfect age-transforming CGI so that we can see the actors at their current ages and their minus-25-years ages? If they can perfect that, it would be as groundbreaking as when the original Jurassic Park hit theaters. Knowing Twin Peaks though, my suppositions are probably all wrong!
