Most of the jazzy-cool pulse to the musical sound of Twin Peaks can arguably be attributed to one man: drummer Grady Tate. Tate’s own slick, sizzle-cymbal-infused bop sound was defined long before the series took shape, and ultimately brought a large portion of the ‘cool jazz’ sonic equation to the table. Tate’s style has been often referred to as ‘hard bop:’ a style that developed in the mid-1950’s jazz landscape and can be traced back to its own extension of the bebop sound about a decade earlier. His style is so distinctively layered with nuance, swing and a musical use of kick drum, that it is little wonder that he is featured so often without accompaniment throughout the series. 3 of Tate’s solo percussion tracks (all utilized in the series) are presented here, showcasing his unique drum sound and performance style. Solo Percussion 3 even reveals a bit of Tate’s own vocalizations, a frequent occurrence that illustrates the level of soulful investment that went into his performances. As an additional related track, this bundle also includes the sparsely-arranged Audrey’s Dance for Percussion and Clarinets.
