So we all know Lynch doesnt do happy endings....
Oh...I can't stop thinking about the way THE DARK TOWER Saga ends...
Is it future is it past? Or is it a circle where everything happens again and again and again for the purpose of existence..
I hope that someone is there to break the cycle...not like in the Dark Tower and poor Roland...

Blue Velvet had a fairy tale ending, in my opinion. Right down to the bird eating the bug ?
As does TP: FWWM on some level. Laura laughing and crying, released with the help of supernatural guardians. On another level though, it presents Cooper (the FBI, masculine authority) as little more than an ineffectual bystander. And then there is Wild at Heart.
Dune, Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, Straight Story and Inland Empire have pretty happy endings. Eraserhead, Elephant Man and FWWM have sad endings because the main character dies, but each finds peace in that death (or journey to new existence), so I don't consider them unhappy. That leaves Mulholland Dr as the real unhappy ending. I would have counted the last episode of Twin Peaks as well...but luckily, that turns out not to be the end!
If the gang decide on further shows in the series, as hinted by Kyle M, there's not necessarily going to be a happy ending, or even a "real" ending.
In any event, there may not be a happy ending, depending on the overall story. As I've mentioned in another post, not every story has to be a morality play, the good guys don't always win and sometimes, the girl isn't saved.
I have a feeling the show will end without closure and with a "WTF?" moment that is so open to interpretation that we'll all be discussing and arguing over its meaning for many years to come.
There is a way for the show to have its cake and eat it.
Lynch and Frost can "do a Nolan", that is, have a definite end, but one that is open to interpretation however the viewer likes - Inception, The Prestige, The Dark Knight Rises, etc.
Lynch, as stated above, sometimes does do happy endings. Terry Gilliam, on the other hand...

Gee, thanks for that; now I can't get that song out of my head...
"...we danced beneath an amber moon..."

Oh I always read that ending as laura ascending to the white lodge/the beatification of laura, and Coop somehow having finally worked out how the lodges work to facilitate this.

We were left with this type of ending at the end of S2 (How's ANNIE??), and we were waiting, debating, and arguing about what it meant for 26 years until S3 started.
I would be quite upset if S3 ended with a similar ending, and I hope we don't have to wait another 25 years before it's resolved 🙁
Season 2 TP, the final ep. was loaded with cliff-hangers to encourage people to lobby harder to not cancel it, but by then ABC was determined to kill it.
Here's one way it could go down:
- Tammy and Gordon go into the Black Lodge.
- Lots of crazy stuff happens, and I mean REALLY insane, like if Part 8 raped Part 3 and had a deformed child.
- They both manage to escape, but Tammy is injured so she gets taken to hospital.
- Gordon gets taken to his hotel room, and asks how Tammy is.
- He gets up to brush his teeth...
Get where I'm heading with this?
"How's Tammy? How's Tammy? How's Tammy?...."

The original script for Blue Velvet had Dorothy killing herself.

LOL!!! 🙂 🙂
Then we'll have to wait 25 more years before this cliffhanger is resolved 🙁 🙁
