Watched Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Fear X” last night … made in 2002, I just hadn’t encountered it before. Very much a homage to Lynch’s work, and in my view done quite well. The film lost a great deal of money and killed-off Refn’s production company of the time. But I am very glad he made it – bravo for him. Seeing it reminded me of what I like best in Lynch’s work – that sort of ironic metalogue he creates with the viewer. In “Fear X” I think Refn not only grasps this but uses it to turn a simple mystery into a commentary on mysteries in general… and on folks who watch mysteries. Highly recommended.
