Twin Peaks co-creator Mark Frost recently jumped on a Zoom call with NME’s Gary Ryan for a rare, heartfelt interview reflecting on the legacy of his creative partner, David Lynch. Frost shared candid memories of their creative process, discussed the show’s enduring influence, and hinted at what might have been for Twin Peaks’ future.
“[David Lynch] was fearlessly creative in the face of anything that came his way, and he was eternally challenging himself to meet that moment and do something more than he had before; it was an ethos and way of living,” Frost told NME. “He was an artist first, last and foremost … He went out the way he wanted to go; you gotta tip your hat to him for that.”
When asked about the possibility of a fourth season of Twin Peaks, the interviewer referenced David Lynch’s 2018 statement suggesting there might be more to the Carrie Page story. To this, Mark Frost responded they had “a little bit of a recipe forming; nothing terribly formal, but it was in the wind.” So while no concrete plans were in place, ideas for continuing the show had been discussed. “It’s still kind of too soon, but it’s something I’ll get around to thinking about long and hard.”
Frost emphasized the importance of creative control, noting that both he and Lynch own the rights to Twin Peaks. This ownership ensures that “nobody could exploit it in destructive or stupid ways,” protecting the integrity of their creation. Looking to the future, Frost made it clear that maintaining the quality and spirit of the original series is paramount. He said, “We wanted to stay true to what we’d done, and that will certainly be my guiding principle going forward with whatever happens with the show or where it goes from here. We’ve set a standard that we have to hold ourselves to.”
Ultimately, Frost left the door open for further developments. In his words: “We’ll see what happens.”
What are your thoughts on a continuation of Twin Peaks without David Lynch in the director’s chair but with Mark Frost as the custodian of the world they created?
UPDATE: The Times also spoke to Mark Frost about a potential season 4 of Twin Peaks. He told them pretty much the same:
We had a very early idea but nothing on paper. Who knows? I didn’t feel it was appropriate to push when his health was uncertain. I can’t even fathom trying to do the show without him, but there may be other ways.
As long as Mark Frost (and Harley Payton) are on board- I say YES!!!
No, write another book if you must but there is no TP without Lynch
Why not, Mark Frost is co creator.
I never expected that Mark would try to continue the story without David. Any attempt to do that will be a horrible failure and I *really* hope that it never happens.
There was discussion and he knows the direction David wanted to go with the story. I say HELL yeah! He is the co-creator and I think he would do Mr. Lynch proud
Let’s rock!
If they created another season in the vein of the original, I would welcome another season…and maybe an actual closure to the story!
If they were to bring forward another season in the vein of the original season, why not! I think there are enough individuals involved to keep the memory of David inline while also honoring the story! Besides, it would be kind of nice to bring closure to the story!
