What or who exactly is the Log?

After rewatching Twin Peaks again, my question is, what exactly is the Log?

It is a character right?  Because it thinks for itself, it has motivations, it communicates with others, using Margaret as its medium.

But it is does seem to want to ensure that certain characters talk to each other, like Major Briggs and Cooper, and Hawk and Margaret.  And it knows about what is going on around it, and in Twin Peaks, so it is a consicous sentient entity.

Is it a tulpa for someone else?  Is someone reincarnated inside it, the same way that Josie is inside the drawer pull?

I would love to hear any thoughts!

The log is the Log Lady's (Margaret Lanterman) husband, at least that is what she explains to Cooper, Harry, and Hawk over coffee and cookies one evening.

We have speculated that the fireman in season 3 was her husband:
