Around the dinner table, the conversation was lively. Thank you but for now, the forum has been archived.
Pretty incredible - the final scenes of 17 and 18 do certainly seem to sync up in a powerful way.
People found examples of synched scenes both within and across earlier episodes. If one could experience all 18 episodes simultaneously, I wonder what could be found?
If this is true, it would seem to be something that both Frost and Lynch should be credited for. The Secret History certainly has hidden messages throughout.
Saying it's an infinite loop is en ending. It's a final conclusion. Even if it goes on an on it's a ending to the series.
By all means, feel free to not accept that these can be synchronised. If that is more satisfying for you, then go with it. But to me, it is bleedingly obvious that they did this on purpose, so imo ignoring it is missing story that they want you to have.
I know the credits happen earlier. It's obviously done that way specifically. The credits roll and roll and roll and meanwhile episode 17 is just sitting there on that one shot looking at the woods. As soon as the credits on episode 18 are finished, the scene changes on episode 17. Episode 18's Lynch/Frost screen is silent for once (so as not to intrude on episode 17 finishing - same thing happens with episode 8) then it melts into the Roadhouse.
The series doesn't technically end - it's still an infinite loop, as you will see if you synch episode 8 with 18...
You got me thinking. There's another lengthy pause in Cole's room, just before Diane walks in. It appears Gordon is listening to something before he tells Diane to come in.
So, do we have to wade through every chuffing episode and see what matches up?
You know, I think there's going to be a lot more conversation around the dinner table for some time yet.
A couple wild thoughts that may be nothing, but may lend credence to part 17 being the actual final episode.
1) Episode 1 and 2 were also shown together. The end credits for episodes 1 and 18 have fairly static shots from the lodges. The end credits for 2 and 17 have musical performances.
2) I'm unsure what Julee Cruise was upset about, but it seemed to come after she saw her episode. Perhaps she was promised the final scene of The Return and felt betrayed that she was at the end of part 17.
I've just watched the final scene. Bloody Hell.
There's bits that 'match up' more than others - but if you're in any doubt watch this from about 53 mins on...

Yes I think there is some serious linkage going on, my mind is racing now stitching together bits and pieces from all over the series. We'll probably still be finding more links in twenty years time.
Julee was pissed because her song got cut short, and other misc grievances. I can't comment on her personal situation with David but watching this "new" way of viewing the last two episodes makes me think the ending is absolutely perfect.

Thanks for posting this and making it much easier for us to investigate. I watched the ending - At the least, it's interesting.

Since Julee Cruise has come up on this thread - Here's what I posted on the first thread I noticed about what she said on Facebook, after I exchanged messages with her.
On her FB page, after the finale, she said "I'm done. 😎 and I could care Less about TP."
Before seeing that, I had read the recent L.A. Times interview where she said about TP, "I will always be proud of this."
So, on FB I posted a question for her, not thinking she would respond. I asked, "Was the L.A. Times quote bogus - 'I will always be proud of this'..?"
She replied: "Nope! The truth, what do you think! 😎 "
---That makes how she actually feels about clear as mud doesn't it?

Hi Sam,
The clue might well be in the soundtrack to that scene. "American Woman" is the song playing while Diane is making her way to meet the FBI task. If I recall correctly that song is also playing while Mr. C is driving to meet Buela and her crew.
Yes indeed, Octavio.
As an aside, it would also explain why Lynch was adamant about no ad libs from the cast. Any deviation from the script - most likely the timing, too - would wreck everything.

I think that people are now syncing everything means you've all discovered how the brain likes to find patterns, even when they don't exist. That's the only thing bleeding obvious here. I can't wait till people start syncing this up with Hill St. Blues. That was an hour long show too.
Em, you seem delightful so I won't waste any more time on you. My final suggestion is to synch 8 & 18 and watch the part where Coop / Richard talks to Laura / Carrie on her doorstep. If you think the interaction that occurs in that scene is random patterns then I don't think there's anything more I can say to help you.

I'm underwhelmed with any potential synching before the 50-ish mark, but these seem obviously synched from at least 52 on.
BTW, if these are supposed to sync up at the very end what is young Laura's scream in Episode 17 supposed to sync with, her fear of the credits in Episode 18?

You snarked so hard that you seem to have missed something.
The scene behind the credits is certainly where we originally heard that scream. It would seem to synch up with her scream after she whispers in Cooper's ear - IF the end credit scene were not played in super slowmo.
In episode 2, it is roughly 30 seconds between the shot where we see Cooper's face from the front while Laura is whispering and her scream. In the synched 17/18, it is roughly 30 seconds between seeing this same shot and Laura's scream.
