I've been left curious about all the ways "gold" has popped up in S3 and trying to think back to whether gold was mentioned in the first two seasons. It was not, best I can recall, but it comes up often lately --in ways that can even seem forced, as in the "hearts of gold" line.
Question: Are the Mitchum brothers going to Twin Peaks?
Yes, they're taking Dougie to the airport to use their private plane, but do we know for certain they will be going any farther?
It may not matter much, but I was struck by Candi's look at Cooper at hospital, as if at that point she revealed that she was not just a strange robot in pink dress, but she had the secret and intelligence , like she knew something about Cooper. Maybe it's no coincidence that girls are going with Mitchum brothers to TP as well.
As for Mullins, I think he IS a good guy. There is such a thing as a good-hearted business person who works in insurance. He has been kinda "working" alongside MIKE and the Fireman and Cooper's good karma to save his life in Vegas
Hi Jesse,
What do you think Mullins heard that drew him out of Cooper's hospital room? Not that we'll ever know. 🙁
(And please, please don't say the Roadhouse version of "Just You"! ;-))

Hi Eric,
It's because Lynch has, (dare I say it?), crossed the threshold into his go, go, go, golden years. 😉
(with apologies to Phillip Jefferies David Bowie)
Golden years, gold whop whop whop
Golden years, gold whop whop whop
Golden years, gold whop whop whop
Don't let me hear you say life's taking you nowhere, angel
Come get up my baby
Look at that sky, life's begun
Nights are warm and the days are young
Come get up my baby
There's my baby, lost that's all
Once I'm begging you save her little soul
Golden years, gold whop whop whop
Come get up my baby
Last night they loved you, opening doors and pulling some strings, angel
Come get up my baby
In walked luck and you looked in time
Never look back, walk tall, act fine
Come get up my baby
I'll stick with you baby for a thousand years
Nothing's gonna touch you in these golden years, gold
Golden years, gold whop whop whop
Come get up my baby
Some of these days, and it won't be long
Gonna drive back down where you once belonged
In the back of a dream car twenty foot long
Don't cry my sweet, don't break my heart
Doing all right, but you gotta get smart
Wish upon, wish upon, day upon day, I believe oh Lord
I believe all the way
Come get up my baby
Run for the shadows, run for the shadows
Run for the shadows in these golden years
There's my baby, lost that's all
Once I'm begging you save her little soul

Agent Cooper and Candie are basically very similar in their social role since that 'restaurant melancholia' scene. Both of them had problems with the world that they wanted solved, then looked to authority as if it was guaranteed to be flawless or even existent(it is criminal), allowing them avoid the problem themselves, smooth it over and 'enjoy the cars at the traffic jam'. Cooper was originally pointing out the insurance fraud, and Candie was deeply upset at the Mitchums for failing the even recognize her desire for true love and her hysterical questioning of the Mitchums. That 'Seven' scene where Agent Cooper brought the 'head sized' box with the pie in it is key: that 'head sized box' contained the exchange of Agent Cooper and Candie's heads for the cherry pie, for the jackpot, for the payout, the gifts, etc in exchange for thinking and dreams gone and accepting criminal rule....... So now both Candie and Cooper are saying about the Mitchums 'they do have hearts of gold, dont they, its true, its really true, etc.'.......
Agent Cooper has also said 'I am the FBI', with his intentions to be the number one boss(the well dressed boss of 'viva las vegas' which he still accepts). Thus, when Agent Cooper says that the Mitchums have 'hearts of gold' I think at this point he is just using them, patronizing them to trick them(while Candie still 'really believes'); and Agent Cooper could then easily eliminate the Mitchums once their role is over and they are no longer needed.....

do whop whop . . . 😉
there is this, from IE the Phantom says, "It glows within me. Like gold."
but more the point, if there is one, there's the gold at the end of the rainbow and the gold at the center of Baum's Oz.
. . . the very first scene in Twin Peaks is Jacoby spray-painting something gold . . . trying to put a luster on something, but only superficially changing the appearance and not the thing itself.
I've taken it that they are people that lacked a positive influence. Thus, like others, being turned good or better by their interaction with Cooper. Maybe this is their chance to show they are better than their past actions.
Just a feel good thought if nothing else. After last night I am in a better mood.
I think that's accurate - They seem very, very simple and very sweet a lot of the time. They're like kids, like teenagers just dealing with what comes their way and not very thoughtful at that.
Are we sure that Dale Cooper, with his recovered cleverness, won't use the brothers till he needs them (he needs, he doesn't want 😉 ) and then accuses Rod and Bradley of their crimes sending them to the famous TP police stations jail cells? 😉
Jim Belushi definitely seems like he can make a decent monkey noise.

OK, maybe this should be separate but I've been thinking about brothers and how prevalent they are. We have the brothers Truman, the brothers Fusco (ugh) and the Mitchum brothers. WHY? And I don't feel like it's just a further exploration of twinning, though I guess that could be one (boring) answer.
Also, if you are rewatching, check out how in the first few appearances of the Mitchums, Belushi seems to materialize in the scene. That is, you don't realize he's in the room at first. Until they get drunk, then he's right there!
Let's not assume Cooper meant what he said. He may be the "Good Cooper", but that doesn't mean he won't lie if it's necessary. I think he's manipulating them to get what he wants. At the very least, that's a free ride to Twin Peaks. But it could be something more. He could be luring them there for some reason...

Don't forget the brothers Horne, Ben and Jerry!

Don't forget the brothers Horne, Ben and Jerry!
OF COURSE. The original brothers.
Here is a quote from a book I am reading right now:
"What if instead of the brother whose obverse existence mine inferred--and who himself untwinnishly inferred me--I had been the Zuckerman boy (brother-M.R.) in that agony?
From The Counterlife by Philip Roth.
But in the The Return, most of the new sets of brothers are very similar to one another, while the originals--Ben and Jerry--are now "obverse".
Whoops- I mean the brothers are similar within their sets.
