James seemed a bit brain damaged, after "good to see you again" and her husband getting angry, he starts saying to her "I like you..." and her husband attacks.

Haha. He did seem a bit slow to comprehend and not willing to accept the jealousy of her spouse. Perhaps he just wanted a first hand account of what Freddy's green-glove-punch could do to a mere mortal.

also, when Freddie punched those guys, the glove made a certain sound. that sound ~could have~ been put in there for comical purposes, but i'm guessing not. david lynch uses sounds a lot in twin peaks, they seem connected to the black or white lounge:

- the tone that the cylinder-shaped object that major briggs left for bobby made

- the mysterious sound that ben horn and his assistant found in the hotel

- various things that happened in the black lounge in the earlier seasons and season 3

It also interrupted the song being played both times he punched

Yes. It caused electrical disruption. Perhaps to the nervous systems of Chuck and his friend as well.

I thought James' responses to Chuck showed the effects of his TBI. He could not articulate.

I was reminded of Fezzik and the albino. "I didn't mean to jog him so hard."

I feel like that is why they made such a big deal that it wasnt live music but a record being played over the speakers. electricity

James has always been about cutting through the B.S.  Sure, Bobby was technically dating Laura, but he just knew that Laura and him were in love, so that made all of their doings justified.  Simialrly, one would imagine that he is aware this married woman (Renee?) has feelings for him (she was sobbing during his performance) and thus he feels he's totally justified in seeking to grow that love.  Who cares about the formality of her being married to some loser. That's never stopped anyone in TP world.

There does seem to be a suggestion that James is a little on the slow side and vulnerable due to the aforementioned bike accident.  In my mind, though I doubt they ever reveal this, I like to image that he was dating Donna, had an accident, said accident is why Donna is no longer with us, and now James is a changed/wounded individual, but still with good intentions in his heart.

Dawg,

If you look back on James, I am not sure much has changed since season 1.  James has always had the facade of a good guy with good intentions, but underneath he is a simple minded womanizer that nearly, blindly continues down the path of someone destine to find and get into trouble.  Bad singer too.

Something was definitely more "wrong" than usual in the Roadhouse that night.

Lynch loves James with no irony as he has stated many times in many places. He puts him as a force for good along with Dale, Big Ed, Gordon, etc. The James hate is subjective and personal with some. James is attracted to damaged but beautiful souls in women. Laura, Donna--Renee seems like a likely candidate as well. I forgot the nuances of the Evelyn story but he was in a pretty manipulate-able state at that (fairly awful) part of the story.

I may have missed something. Why do people think Freddie might be a figment of James' imagination?

Because, until this episode, no one other than James has ever interacted with him.

Thanks.

Hmm, I'm not getting that vibe off James/Freddie.

Thank you for your courageous defense of James (there is a lot of passionate James-hating out there, to a degree that has taken on a life of its own). But why the attack on hippies? Hippies, by their very nature, do not hate!

Sorry hippies,, I'm with you... IMO the song is genius, not like a hollywood song made for a movie , its capturing the 50's genre mood and just what u expect a couple of cool kids to write being naive, dramatic and ready to conquer with a bike , guitar and a dark secret..
