What was the point of showing her dying husband way back at the beginning of the series? What was to come of that? Are we just not supposed to see them again? And what the heck was the black box in Argentina? We have to get answers to these things right? We can't just be shown this stuff and forget about it. With Lynch, every single shot has purpose. Can anybody think of other red herrings that aren't answered? Like the 1-1-9 girl and the boy, and of course Candie. What the heck??
And, of course, every single character that sat in that booth at The Roadhouse - why were we privy to their conversations?

The way I see it: They are allusions to soap threads (also recall them) and expand the Twin Peaks World without actually having to show or investigare those threads. They aren't necessarily important to the story being told. Brief appearances of characters mentioned are shown when (if) they cross paths with characters that are pertinent to the story (or once were). E.g., the James scene in part 15. I don't think they are red herrings at all nor do I think that they warrant in depth speculation or theorizing. But, I find the want-to-know fascinating, likewise with the out-of-hand dissmissal of any meaning at all. I also enjoy reading threads on trying to make sense of the conversations.
