Around the dinner table, the conversation was lively. Thank you but for now, the forum has been archived.
I'm probably more critical of my favorite artists than anyone else. Because we hold our favorites to some higher personal standard that can't be fully satisfied.
I've made critical comments about The Return, and eps 10-12 are my least favorite, but a lot of it has blown my mind in the best way. Episode 8 will probably be stuck in my subconscious forever!
I admit I would have liked to see a lot more of some core characters from the original show, but I've enjoyed most of the additions. My main 'fear' is that, with so many new interested plot threads, tons of things will be unresolved by design. But that's the storytelling game, I suppose. "Always leave them wanting more."
Either way, thrilled TP came back in any form. There is nothing like it, nor will there be.
Roberto, this is precisely what I was going for... Thanks! If it's not about resolving plot threads, then it's not about resolving plot threads... It is what it is, and folks will love it and hate it, as others have already said.
Oh yes, there's a HUGE difference between "I didn't like parts of x episode, as I found it {insert reason)" and "This week's episode was too slow. FACT. And if you liked it you're a fanboy"
The second type of comment has been creeping in. Which can be ignored. But if then the said troll poster asks you to justify why you don't agree with them, well, quite frankly they can sod off.
Can we maybe get a Diane "Fuck you troll" gif? That could be handy...
I've been reading this forum for quite some time now, and there's one thing that consistently annoys me... but we'll get to that later. For now, let me just say I have nothing against you if you dislike The Return. I don't care. All the more for me. Now, onto my main points.
1. Directors do not have to cater to you! It's all very well and good to say how you would have done it, and how you expect film to work, but at the end of the day, directors have to cater to no-one! As long as they enjoy it, that's all that matters. If you enjoy it, well that's just a plus.
2. This is the big one... If you dislike The Return, why are you still here?! Obviously I welcome different opinions, but it gets tiresome reading through every single one of these threads saying that Lynch didn't do something exactly to their standard. You can have your opinion... doesn't mean I have to read the same one again and again. But this is what really annoys me... when people ask "Why are you still here?" the answer I commonly see is, "I have faith in Lynch."
Really? I'm not going to throw "You just don't appreciate Lynch" at you or anything like that, but last I heard, constant criticism of the way someone does things, is not really having faith in them...
I just wanted to get my 20 cents on the matter across, and no thread I'd seen had adequately addressed the points I wanted to get across.
Sorry if I seem angry, but I'd like to finish with one of my favourite quotes from anything. In an episode of Doctor Who (specifically, Resurrection of the Daleks) Tegan recalls something her Aunt Vanessa used to say "If you stop enjoying it, give it up." This applies to so many things, not the least of which is this show...
Just think. If you despise it and don't see it bringing you any enjoyment, why keep watching? Thank you for reading the musings of an angry old man.
Oh no youre one of those types
