Shelly's mood swing was disturbing and unnatural. I'm afraid Red has her literally in thrall.
On an unrelated note, my wife has been all swoony for Getty since Lost Highway, and I always thought Amick was the real queen of Twin Peaks, so... there are probably some awkward scenes ahead.
Now it seems more clear how the drugs are getting into Twin Peaks. Red is running the operation, and Bobby is turning a blind eye.
Red is the fusion of Leo and young Bobby. So part of it makes sense that she would be so girlishly enthralled with him. But the other part you would think would frighten and appall her. Her attraction to him makes sense although it is horrifying. She certainly has a thing for the bad boys and Bobby isn't one anymore.
And she certainly isn't going to win and mother of the year award for jumping up from the table like a teen to go make out with her creepy bf. This WAS so unnatural and jarring as has been pointed out by others. Its "ironic" that in the very first scene we see her at the Bang Bang bar, she is telling her friends how her daughter is with the wrong guy while Red was flirting with her across the bar.
Are they supposed to be secretly flirting? I mean it's not super secret obvioiusly, but she doesn't talk to him openly in front of other people in the scenes they've been together in so I'm wondering if there's something to that.
I suspect that the ring is from Bobby and her marriage. I think they are divorced or separated so long it's effectively a divorce.
Red's connection to Shelly seems strange to me. When we saw him in Episode 6 he was with an entourage and with a very nice car. In Episode 1 and 11 he's not, but at least in the 1st episode he's at the Roadhouse with a Renault bartending him (I assumed later to connect him to the illicit schemes the Renaults are known for). In 11, he's just walking the streets. What would Red see in a local 40-something waitress (cute as she is)? Strikes me as odd since he has the trappings of wealth and that would attract girls like flies to a pile of shit in a town like that. Even if he were manipulating her, what would be the end game?
Also, that would be really awkward if the "same place" is Jack Rabbit's Palace or thereabouts. I was thinking somewhere like Mary Ann's (the place he mentioned in Episode 6) or the Roadhouse, but I would like it if that were the case. I just don't see him as a nature boy.
It's a simple food chain thing.
Bobby will take Steven down the next time he breaks the law.
(Hopefully) Red will kill the shit out of Richard.
And then, Bobby will kill Red.
Problem solved. Bobby still won't get the girl of his dreams ('cause she's obviously into scumbags), but at least he will get some amount of revenge. ;D
Richard is afraid of Red, that's why he's splitting town after taking money from Sylvia.

This is a really great point and I am going to be consumed by it for the rest of the evening.
The only thing that I can think that he could possibly be "using" her for would be info related to the Sheriff station via Bobby. Even if they aren't together anymore I'm sure that if she was a deputy wife for any amount of time she became familiar with some of the goings on there. It makes the most sense in relation to the drugs too. Any other reason I can come up with would be a stretch.

That's such a good point - for some reason I find Balthazar Getty completely forgettable (I'd obviously be a really crap gold-digger!) and didn't even realise that he was the bloke in Lost Highway. I'd watched it again last week...
So I was thinking Shelley would be out of his league, whereas in Twin Peaks, I suppose he's the high flyer. Though I always felt Leo never quite fit the bill either.
Back then as a high school kid Shelly had low self-esteem to accept marrying Leo. Though she did come to realize what a bad marriage it was, that Leo didn't love her ( and that was before he tried to kill her at the mill ).

I always found it "strange" and sad that there was never any mention of her parents, even after Leo started spitting up and saying "new shoes." It always gave me a sense of her extreme loneliness and alienation/isolation. She was only 17 afterall.

I was under the impression he was suddenly deciding to split town because Miriam had told the Sheriff's dept. that Richard was the one who ran over the boy. She even said that she was surprised he hadn't been arrested yet.
Regarding the food chain, after all that (Red kills Richard, Bobby kills Red, etc), there will be a cage match to the death between Diane and Tammy.
So ep. making it clear they are separated, then. And Bobby probably still loves her.
This broke my heart. I really wanted them to be married. Unfortunately Bobby turning out to be a 'good guy' may have made him unappealing for Shelly. She likes them bad.
Tell you what.
Shelley has a bloody poor taste in men 😀
Leo,
Bobby (young Bobby anyway, an ex murderer himself)
Red.
Terrible taste!
You channeling The Donald there, old son?
Lots of people keep the name after they're divorced. I don't think their relationship status is clear to us yet.
Bobby might be turning a blind eye to Red and Richard's drug dealing out of loyalty to his family, but maybe it's also because he knows he used to be like them and he'd be a hypocrite.
