From "Leggio", italian daily paper :
Q: Sherilyn, what do you think was Audrey's fate?
A: I have my idea. She is for sure in a world that is "different" from the one the other characters inhabit. Fans have said that she may be in a coma, or that she's dead, but I don't see such a dark fate for her. For me, she lives like in a dream dimension, I like to think that there's a light in her, that the darkness didn't win.
Q: what did Lynch tell you on the set of "The Return"?
A: He told me: this scene, do it like you did it 25 years ago. But it was frustrating, because I'm not the same person I was 25 years ago. Furthermore, back then, we often filmed without a script. But this time we had a script.
Q: And what did you feel when you read it?
A: The first time I read about Audrey I started to cry. I didn't like the first version of the script, I opposed it, I walked away. And eventually, David changed it.
Q: Audrey was (past tense in the source text - TN) a much loved character.
A: Yes, I got mail from so many girls. They told me that Audrey was a role model for them, a strong girl they could take as an inspiration.
Q: Gotta say, Twin Peaks also scared an entire generation...
A: Yes, that's true. Where were your parents when you were watching us on tv?
Q: Would you come back for a fourth season?
A: For sure. I would be ready to put up my dukes and take on David again.

That's pretty interesting. I wonder what the original idea was. She threatened to walk away and then It was changed to what it is now and she is more satisfied. Seems that ambiguity is not as harsh in this case (at least to Sherilyn).
I like her a lot. She is a great deal of Audrey.

Yeah, wow, if she was willing to accept Audrey being in an undefined limbo or lodge, I can't imagine how much worse it was originally. Even the unconscious rape made it through the revision.
Inquiring minds want to know the rest! Tell us now or pitchforks! haha
I'm pretty sure this were the questions asked to her at the Q&A of the TP UK festival. Even the answers are the same!

It's scripted. ?
Is it wrong that this made me kind of mad at her?

Because she had David change Audrey's story? If David didn't see any merit in her suggestion, he would't have done it.
I'm so curious about the original idea. She said Audrey still has some light in her. Well, how dark must the original have been? Raped by an evil doppelganger, mother of a sociopathic criminal - how much worse can there be?

For making David rewrite Audrey's arc? DL wouldn't have done so if he didn't see merit in Sherilyn's suggestion.

There's a rumor her original role was the one who would be assaulted by Richard, not her grandma. If this is true, it doesn't seem so bad, but maybe something else would happen to her character.
Here is Sherilyn answering that question at SpaCon2017. Her reply begins at 19:30.
What she says here is she and David got into a fight when she read the original script. Then David came back, changed it and that was when she started to cry. She doesn't say anything here that she had David rewrite it. Maybe she did or she didn't, but DL did anyway.

"So being back in there, there was a road to get there that we had to walk on. Because it was happening, and then it wasn’t happening, and then it was happening… and I had some frustrations dealing with the whole show, with David, I just had feelings about it. So finally we came to terms with what we were doing, and he wrote this beautiful stuff for Audrey to do, that was upsetting and sad and haunting. It was David again. You go over to David’s pool and you dive in."
"You go over to David’s pool and you dive in."
So true. What a great way to put it.

Yeah, but true enough, and "mad" is probably too strong a word. I guess I just really want to know what the original plan was. And, we don't really know what happened.
My understanding was that only Kyle MacLachlan got to read the whole script, and everyone else only got the scenes they were in, for what it's worth.
