The irony to all of this probably being that Lynch and Frost are laughing because... the story is what the story is, no hidden meaning, no secret code to solve.  I can see them now...

(We went to a dollar store and just grabbed a cheap hair pin for Mr. C's ponytail; for the room 315 key fob, we were too lazy to go back and research so we just grabbed one that a fan made (I mean really, we didn't have a lot of budget here - did you see that green glove prop we used???); haha but really, it's cute that these fans are creating so much for this simple little show!)

I don't really believe that, but it would be ironic if it really were just that plain and simple.

When I rewatched The Return, I realised how funny some parts were. There were scenes that had me laugh out loud. Even my husband, who's not a TP enthusiast and who's not into Lynch, laughed out loud at one of the Dougie/Janey-E scenes. Even without context, he thought it was hilarious. That's one thing I noticed when rewatching: The Return is, at least in parts, hilarious. Not all of it, of course, but some stuff really cracked me up.

Yeah, a lot of it is very funny, reminds me of an American pop culture take on Beckett or Ionesco, the theatre of the absurd thing, as do other scenes across Lynch's back catalogue.

That whole scene with Dougie in the family kitchen with the tie on his head and the face he pulls when he drinks the hot coffee ?

Also, I find the scene with Ike the Spike running around stabbing people hillarious for some reason - very inappropriate. It's not the stabbing parts themselves and the blood - all of which is very graphic - but the way he runs around, and then gets upset at his bent spike. It cracks me up!

OMG, the scene with Dougie in the kitchen and the tie on his head - cracks me up 😀 Or the expression on his face when he is given some coffee, he looks so happy. Or the scene in which Dougie has sex with Janey-E (or rather vice versa) - again, the expression on his face is priceless. I found that rewatching adds a lot to the show - stuff that I missed the first time around because I was so busy trying to figure out what it was all about. I didn't give up on that the second time around but I knew what to expect and was more relaxed. Scenes that I dismissed as boring when the show first aired now seemed just plain hilarious - basically everything involving Dougie, but also the reaction of all the people around him. When I first watched, my brain went "Wait. Shouldn't they behave exactly the opposite way? Why isn't anybody noticing that he's different?" That was my brain trying to rationalize everything. The rewatch was much more relaxed because all of a sudden, I saw the fun in the behaviour people displayed towards Dougie. I still can't get over it that I didn't notice it the first time around. It's so obvious 🙂

As for Ike the Spike: I get that. It's not the stabbing and the bloodshed but rather his posture. It's more like a fight in a comic strip or movie. A bit like the Coyote and the Roadrunner, with Ike being the Coyote who tries to accomplish his goal before the Roadrunner gets him again 🙂

A guy I know has a theory along those lines. He said years ago "You know, I think David Lynch just sets up a camera, films a lot of stuff, edits it and then laughs his arse off because people are trying to make sense of it" 🙂  I don't think he's exactly right there but I think that people - including myself - tend to overanalyse things, try to find meaning where there probably is none instead of simply enjoying what they are watching. And I think that Lynch (and Frost) know that we start analysing as soon as we start watching. And that they toy with this.

I still want to forward the idea that it's art and is to be interpreted by the receiver and not to be explained.

But I still wonder.....

Totally agree. The beauty of Twin Peaks is that everybody can come up with their own interpretation, and since there's no final explanation by either Lynch or Frost, basically every interpretation is correct. Or can be correct. I think there are some aspects that most fans can agree upon but most of the show is just open for interpretation.

Having said that, I must admit that when I saw the finale for the first time, I went "Wait. What? Why's the screen black? That cannot have been it, can it? Oh no. Not again. Not another cliffhanger ending. Dammit! So many questions unanswered. Aaaaaaah!" - something like that. Part of me still wants some explanation or at least confirmation regarding some of the theories people have come up with. But at the end of the day, I find it much more interesting to think about what I've just seen and try to figure it out myself.

It has certainly kept us going a year later.

When that screen went to black I just screamed "no no no no no"

Yes, and if a movie or tv show manages to do that - keep people going, make them discuss theories, rewatch it, etc. - that's really something. It's not that common, since most tv shows are pretty much straightforward and/or offer you an explanation at the end. Sure, people theorise about other shows as well but it dies down pretty quickly after a show has ended. Not with this one. To me, that's just proof of how good it is.

As for the reaction to the ending, I can SO relate to that. I was very close to screaming angrily at the screen as well but was too confused and puzzled to actually do it. You could say I was dumbstruck. Part of me also refused to believe this was the end; I waited for a while to see if there was a 19th episode even though I knew that this was it. So, instead of screaming at the screen, I went online and started to read up on theories - my confused brain wanted answers at that point 🙂

I wanted to hunt Lynch down and punch him in the jewels.

This forum has given me the much needed therapy to deal with that......although when Earle is brought up I am made aware that I still have much work to do on my anger issues (TP induced).

When that screen went to black I just screamed "no no no no no"

When the screen went to black last september, I had put my hands on my head and said "Oh putain !".

As many people here are not speaking french, the translation is : "Oh, f***!"

I had probably did and said the same thing when the screen went to black at the end of The Sopranos.

But at this time, there were only two possibilities.

Not hundreds stories or theories.

So that's why we are still here 9 months after the final scream.

*lol* I can relate to that, although for me, it was more confusion and a very strong feeling of "Oh hell no, not again, WHY???" No anger, though. Maybe because I've vented most of that years back when watching the "Lost" finale.

This forum is amazing and was one of the first places I looked up after the finale. Some of the theories on here are mindboggling and very well thought through. Also, it helps to vent with other people who feel the same as oneself. Some stuff will always be annoying - for me, it's that drunken guy in the cell who keeps drooling (which is disgusting) and repeats everything the other inmates say. I find him annoying to an extend that I want to punch him in the face.

@Lucas: Great artwork! Did you do that? It's amazing and captures that last moment perfectly.
