Well now, I thought you were more east, no? I should know this. I'm at about 70 minutes to Bellvue. Many apologies if I erred.
No, I'm more south now. But with traffic around here, it'll probably take me as long to get there as it would take you.
Maybe I'm fooling myself, but I think Twin Peaks is alive and well. If Reber had identified herself by her real name, I'd be more pessimistic. For me, when she called herself Tremond it was like throwing a life preserver to a drowning man.
I suppose The Final Dossier "proves" Cooper messed with time but I don't think it necessarily means that the history of seasons 1 and 2 and most of 3 never happened or is lost forever. Cole supposedly will remember the Unofficial Version and I think there were enough hints that Hawk will too. That must mean something. Maybe everything will loop back to it at some point and it will be official again.
Or maybe I'm fooling myself. Whenever I try to come to a firm conclusion, it's like standing on the floor of the red room when the Evolution of the Arm's doppelganger declares "non-existent." I take a step or two and lose my balance, over and over and over.
An imteresting thing to note is that Lynch only decided to cast Mrs Reber (as far as we know anyway) when he came to visit the house when scouting locations, old and new. This is from an interview with Mrs Reber that I think is on the 25yearslater site. Assuming the script was done and dusted by then, did Lynch change the ending after getting new inspiration in the Reber house? Or did he see something that made him think she'd work in the ending as written? I think its extremely significant that the names Chalfont and Tremond were used but I just can't quite unlock the meaning.
Part of me kind of wished he had just used the Rebers' name. Although depressing, it would have made so much more sense to me. But like you Chris, I cannot make rhyme nor reason of the uses of Tremond and Chalfont. It fits with some theories.......theories that I hate.

Which theories in particular Brandy? My mind has gone blank.

Theories that Cooper is the dreamer and just some psychopathic murderer who created TP in his delusional head.
Oh yeah, I don't buy into the pyschopath theory. The dreamer stuff is still up in the air, but I think it'd be awful if all of Peaks was just dismissed as a dream.
I'm not a fan of the idea that it is all a dream either. In fact, it looks like much of the Twin Peaks history may have been retconned, and that doesn't sit well with me at all. That reason alone is more than enough to really hope we get some more Twin Peaks in some form, even novels would be welcome.
And one more thing, there is this few seconds scene.

The camera follows Cooper's car and stays steady.

Bendigo Boulevard and North Bend Way signs.
We are not in Twin Peaks, we are in North Bend WA.
(This sign and the other ones at this crossroad are ever out of frame in the original series or The Return).
Just my theory/hypothesis. North Bend does exist in TP universe: Mike Nelson works in a Chevrolet car dealership in North Bend (check Part 5) and probably North Bend is a twin town of TP itself. It has its own RR Diner (one of the franchise?) and a house similar to the Palmers'. But probably it is not intended to be the same town.
we should...
no wait..
what i'm about to propose needs it's own thread..
search for 'Twin Peaks: What's Next'
I personally am not down with any theories that suggest that the town of twin peaks is a dream however the more I see people say that episode 18's world is the real world the more I think it is not , and is possibly the dream in question ....as everybody has pointed out that there are a lot of real life appearances of street names ,gas stations, real life owners of houses, what I then think of is that in the real world motels that we stay in don't just up and change overnight into completely different motels, now in dreams this kind of thing is commonplace and we don't notice because we're dreaming and havnt got our big boy/girl thinking caps on. Apparently if you dream about your home it could look exactly like it but when you are inside can look completely different but the mind does not compute and carries on as you already believe you are in familiar territory.
still leaves the question of whose dream ..
sorry no answers there...
Maybe señorita dido.....
she never gets mentioned ...
