I have a theory:
The Chalfont bodysnatched the Tremond when they sold them the Palmer House. Alice Tremond from The Return is therefore the younger Mrs. Tremond from season 2 and FWWM. We're in the past, before the Palmer moved in, and before Mrs. Tremond became old. Which is why Cooper asks "What year is this?" And Carrie Page suddenly realises she will be Laura Palmer in a future life.
