Can anyone explain exactly why there will be no episode 9 today? Is it Lynch/Frost's copy of S1 in 1990 when episode 8 was a 'grandiose finale', a supercliffhanger to season 2?

Yep.  There's no episode 9 today because it's not being broadcast.  There you go, hope that helps.  😉

There was also no episode on Memorial Day weekend. Maybe they're skipping holiday weekends.
