Around the dinner table, the conversation was lively. Thank you but for now, the forum has been archived.
Wow. First off, David Lynch, ladies and gentlemen.
Second, ...David Lynch.
Did is I just watch Twin Peaks or Hobos From Outer Space? With about 15 minutes to go im wonderingly if id mistakenly played the wrong TV show. Was almost excited that , "yes it was a mistake now I get to watch twin peaks", came to mind. Then I remembered the Giant, or should I say '???????' ?
my favourite part was the first couple scenes as Roy shot Mr C. I thought 'yay finally, maybe Dale will show up sooner than later.' Lol then a bunch of Black Figures started smearing Mr Cs blood all over his face and I realized this probably wasn't the end of Mr C. I loved the music that played as the Black figures surrounded him. As the credits always say, 'ominous' indeed. I also appreciateD the 9 inch nails bit to continue with the Mr C situation. Perfect music.
The rest of the show I am still processing. Except for the Horse bit. I'm guessing this is in reference to the White Horse seen when Bob is killing.
Is the picture on the wall in Gordon's office an atomic bomb blast? I saw it when he was doing the bird call before Albert came in to tell him about his meeting with Diane. I'll have to go back and look again, but my initial memory is that it looked like the bottom part of a mushroom cloud.
So...
the atomic bomb, or the splitting of the atom, ushered in a violent, destructive force or entity to our planet/dimension: The figure that visited the glass box , who is also the source of Bob it seems. It also got the attention of other intelligences in another nautical dimension who seem to have seen this kind of disturbance before-and maybe sit patiently in a Victorian parlor monitoring for it. They launch a counter measure represented by Laura Palmer-a being who is both pure and alluring to the Bob force, and pneumatic tube her to earth.
Maybe the roach baby is the Laura force. It enters a young girl not unlike Laura-pure but sexually percolating. Will she be Bob/charcoal man's first victim? Got a light? Fire walk with me? Lights my fire...
There seems to be a history here of the genesis and first incarnation of a battle of good v evil where the arbiters are not gods but the giant and an opera singer. It's looking like Lynch's version of The Fall. And it's horribly beautiful.
...maybe
I'm wondering, with the apparent connection of the atom bomb to the introduction of BOB to this world, and Gordon's huge picture of the cloud behind his desk.
I'm guessing he put it there because that's the origin of "Blue Rose" (first direct contact with the Black Lodge), and he seems to be intimately involved in those cases, if not heading the group by now. So the picture is there as a sort of reminder.
Speaking of the episode overall, I generally surrendered to the images that Lynch gave us, but still have to recognize that the symbolism here is some of the most richly cohesive so far in this series. We don't know what much of it means yet (or indeed if we ever will know), but a lot of connections are right out in the open as of tonight. I was constantly thinking of shots, designs, images from previous episodes and puzzling over their implications.
This episode has had the same effect on me that the sopranos finale did.
At first, I hated it. I flat out said "that was a complete waste of an hour". Then after digesting it for a few (and getting feedback from those here), I came to appreciate what a watched more bc I understood what happened (assuming the bob origin and Laura being created to counter him is right).
Still think it was longer than needed and a bit too "art housey", but it ties into the tp world more than when I watched it.
Evil came with the atomic bomb?
Well, if you're evil enough to invent something that can kill everyone, the Black Lodge thinks you're their kind of people!

Dont forget the picture of Franz Kafka on the opposite side of Cole's office, when Kafka searches the halls of the state-government what does he find, 'shes gone', reality destroyed, the atom-split....and eternal waiting on some idiot Denise around it.....in other words, a government that does not do its job but is only caught up in excesses, flattery(the flowers and compliments necessary for Denise), arbitrariness, tyranny, etc.
I believe that the woodsmen are people who used to live around the nuclear tests and somehow were possessed by that vomit mixed with the nuclear dust. The atom splitting opened the gateway to some magical world, some lynchian dream world, something like Stephen King's 'The Mist'.
Maybe the frog will stay inside that girl (Sarah?) until it's birth as Laura. So, Laura was sent to save the world, but couldn't live up to the expectations and she eventually give in to the temptations. I think it's some sort of Jesus Christ emulation with The Giant being God himself, but with all insane mundanity from Lynch. Or i am just getting crazy at all.

I was thinking this also. Their charred skin reminds me of Hiroshima victims. Maybe hoboes from near the Trinity site?
One more thing! All that "gotta light" stuff seems to be the modus operandi of those doppelgangers, repeating in a awkard way some manners from the host, just like the Bad Cooper did with Cole.
My mind is f*cked. All I can suggest is this.. From the ideas brought forth in The Secret History Of Twin Peaks's esoteric references, nuclear tests and such pursuits were tied in with occult rituals. Such rituals intended to rip open the fabric of reality itself and make contact with.. other intelligences.
It's interesting we always seem to see the "demons," but never the "magicians" who seek to bring them forth for their unknown purposes.
I believe in this episode we see the activation of activities of these demons, spirits, aliens, WHATEVER, into our modern world.
"Mama" certainly seems to be the entity from the glass box in the early episodes of this season. She seems to give birth or bring forth evil into our world, specifically Bob.
I cannot begin to comprehend what The Giant or his rotund female companion were doing or the significance of Laura in that golden globe..
The grimy bearded men who "healed" Evil Cooper- no idea. Although they seem like.. an endless LEGION of demons?
The scenes of "Got a Light" demon ("I am the water I am the well") and the alien creature crawling into the throats of that girl are among the most horrifying and beautiful images I've seen on film. But I have no interpretation.
Wasn't there something, in The Secret History of Twin Peaks, about some sort of demon (that was somewhat implied to be a creature of the Lodge or connected to such entities) called Mother of Abominations? Because I kept thinking about through out most of the hour.
"To Laura. Godspeed."
I'll never hear that line the same way again.
Just another thought:
I don't think that the "hobos" are hobos at all, they are woodsmen / loggers: in the Secret History of Twin Peaks a newspaper clipping from 1902 is included (page 66/67) (taken from the Spokane Spokesman) that tells of a fire in a sawmill that claimed the lifes of eight people. It was caused by the "war" between the Packards and the Martells who jammed the river with logs (harming nature through their excessive cutting of wood in their rival companies).
Maybe those dead, burned loggers have been given a very sinister function in the "afterlife".

Sounds like me with Inland Empire. I was so angry after watching it lol. I mean, I didn't expect to get everything, but I got like nothing! And that made me angry.
But after reading different takes on it, and relaxing a bit, I gave up on the idea of understanding, and just tried to watch it. It seems there are very different interpretations of this, and yes I would like to understand it better, but if I can't, then I'll just have to watch it and chill.
I think that that experience helps me now. I don't have to understand everything anymore. It's fun to read here though. And when I feel completely lost, I just do as the kids do, watch the beautiful pictures. =)

I think you got it perfectly.
