Around the dinner table, the conversation was lively. Thank you but for now, the forum has been archived.
Isn't it strange that there is still no follow up (police investigation, FBI, corpses found, billionaire identified?) on the New York part of the story, S3E1 and S3E2? No, because it´s a metastory, Lynch´ cultural comment on the world of TV. I have a bet going with some Dutch peakies that this part of The Return will never have any follow up, nowhere in the still 10 episodes to come.
Returning to the world of TV after 25 years and looking back on his big frustrations (restrictions, obligations, ratings going down, being taken off prime time) Lynch incorporated a vile commentary on the TV world into The Return. In the NY highrise we as TV viewers on our couch watch a couple on a couch watching a TV. There's 8 camera's on a glass box (= the TV) where the art/cinema of David Lynch enters from 'outside' but cannot be captured or boxed in. When DC is in the box no one is watching, and when Mother is in it she annihilates Sam and Tracey. Ergo: the 'normal' TV viewers cannot handle this and loose their heads. Whatever the loads of capital and resources the TV bosses ('billionaires') will spend on encapsulating Lynch and his work...they will fail because Lynch is back. Retaliating. With a vengeance.
No wonder the guard is missing...
We'll see. Wanna bet?
Actually, I kind of like this idea.
I thought something similar (except the experiment being Lynch) when I first saw Part 1. The box has a similar shape to the cameras used to record it, and seemed as the watchers were being watched back (as a metaphor of people getting data of what you do in your PC, TV, Console, etc.).
While I think these kind of metaphors are accurate, I also think they will serve a major role in the show and will be revisited at some point. There is a reason why they were actually shown to Gordon and Albert by Tammy at the FBI offices, so they are -to some extent- investigating (or interested in) the case.
Or Tammy is showing David-Lynch-as-Gordon-Cole his ratings and audience reach 🙂
Very interesting theory...
...but it would piss me off if they were never revisited. Lynch can use these scenes as a smart metaphor but they were too engaging to be merely used as real life symbolism.
Im just too interested to see who the billionaire is that has an interest in the lodge and Coopers Return.
So 'experiment' crushes the love out of the couple. Anyone mention where they think it went? Even if we only see bits and pieces, I have a feeling it will be included and related to Senorita Dido and ??????? and possible hints about how the 'experiment' might've traveled 'back' to take care of some business in 1945 White Sands.
I don't think he would place such a monumental scene in the show just to make a sarcastic comment. Everything he does has a deeper meaning. It might be both though 🙂
The glass box and its complicated electronics were designed to replicate specific conditions found in the White Sands blast, which is how Mother was drawn into our New York plane of existence while chasing Coop. My spin anyway and 99% probability of being wrong.
On that subject, the tv scene in FWWM was him venting about ABC.
There is a kind of an echo in how Mother 'ate' the heads of Sam & Tracey and how the 'head' Woodsman/Dugpa/Charcoaler crushed skulls in New Mexico. (Mother being a bit more throrough)
I don't think the Experiment "ate" anyone, she just ripped them up. There was a lot of thrashing around and screaming but nothing to suggest eating.
'Heavenly mutilated' is what Tammy calls the result S3.03 timecode around 52:00. Want me to show you the photo of the 'victims' again? Okay, 'ripped up'. But why is Mother/Experiment 'removing' so much of their heads/brains?
