So I was rewatching all of season 3 to get ready for this episode. After this episode, I read the Secret History of Twin Peaks.

There was an exchange of technology for genetic material hinted in the Secret History with the "greys". The "Nordic types" wanted the US to give up the bomb. So I see the white lodge trying to prevent more rifts that let the greys feed on our base human nature failing. Our lust for power had us get powerful technology from the greys but we had to give them genetic material.

This negotiation took place in 1955. Is 1956 the exchange of that genetic material.

So while thinking about that with this episode I was musing on the technology in use. Bad Coop having the ability to reprogram tracking equipment from his cell phone and other "magick" technology.

I think of in the lodges how sound is important and it struck me Gordon Cole has an ancient hearing aid, even for the first 2 seasons this was an outdated piece of equipment.  And I realized when Albert asks Gordon to see Diane he knows Gordon can hear him clearly. I am wondering if Gordon is listening to something else.

When Tammy has a wire and he sends her away and turns up his device I am wondering if Gordon wasn't doing this to whisper but doing this to make sure there was no recognizable sound from the other side, listening.

I know it isn't clearly episode 8 but that part in the secret history is really bugging me. I understand the idea that we brought this on ourselves with the bomb, but that we had the choice to end it and we decided to hide the rift between the worlds for more power fascinates me.

Do you remember when Gordon kisses Shelly at the RR in series 2? He can hear her perfectly when she talks... but can only hear her and nobody else... why?

I read a theory about the fact that Gordon only listens to the 'truth' and only hears when 'truth' is spoken. Why is Shelly the 'truth' that can be heard and nobody else is important?

I also believe that the girl from '56 is the first experiment for 'genetic material' that the greys are looking for... I just don't know how the 2 things are linked.

Gordon Cole is one of my yrev very favorite characters in the TP universe,

if not my favorite!

And i believe he hears only things that he really wants to hear.

Cole could hear Shelly perfectly because he was mesmerized by her!

Also i always thought maybe the hearing equipment helps him to hear other sounds like stuff that have to do with Blue Rose cases and similar strange phenomena.

In addition after so many years Cole's mind could have accepted the issue with his hearing and became a mental thing.

At the end of the day this is a huge part in Cole's life and it has its benefits and disadvantages.

A mix of all those is what i believe is going on with Cole.

Yes.

The hearing problem is only a trick for whenever he meets chicks he likes, then he can pull an I can hear you clearly!  Shelly is just the only one we happen to witness.

But the real question is will Gordon finally hook up with Shelly???

Yeah, if was simply a matter of a physical disability, why would he say 'this thing is turned up to the max' as an excuse for why he cannot hear? It would seem that if it was just a hearing aid, turning it up to the max would do the opposite; so it sounds more like he is receiving some kind of transmission.

Also, his hearing problem seems to be not hearing alone, but rather it is related to some kind of thinking-emotional connection he has with the world that allows him to reach a 'hidden' level not directly apparent on the surface, something that is 'manifesting'/becoming out of nothing, probably via the device.  He was the mentor of cooper, who also used a 'tibetan' method of intuition to discover hidden clues.   Remember when sound acts 'as a knife in his brain' shortly after he admits he doesnt know about Mr. C and that 'something is very wrong'; it is the 'spiritual-thinking' disturbance resulting from his encounter with cooper that causes his hearing to be changed.

Maybe it was Becky Cole before it became Becky Burnett!

"Sounds good Sheriff, but I just ate."
"CAR-SICK!"

And no, the one he has now is not literally the same as in the original series & FWWM. This one he uses a blue-tooth ear-piece. He may need it but not be as bad off as portrayed in the original series.

Maybe. It's entirely possible that Gordon is the father of Shelley's daughter.

I like the idea that he only listens to "truths" or that he's also using the device to pick up signals. I reacted to the scene when he's talking to Albert and sends away Tammy and turns up the volume to max. When Albert confesses to him that he's been in contact with Jeffries, Cole is quiet for a while as if assessing if what Albert is saying is really true.. or listening for something else... all you hear is some white noise or hum from his hearing aid. Is he listening for something there or is he simply not hearing at all? His mind seems to be elsewhere. Anyway, he seems to decide to trust the info Albert gives him.

@oyster_bells

Yup, to me this is one of the biggest mysteries in the show: was that scene with Shelly a real miracle, or does he simply use this trick to flirt? And if it wasn't a miracle, why would they go to Jacoby to ask him about it?
