Around the dinner table, the conversation was lively. Thank you but for now, the forum has been archived.
I think you're right, Kim. To me it looks like Hawk's eyes moving right-to-left and then left-to-right (at 25:17) is shown backwards. Difficult to say how it would look different if simply shot that way but I suspect that it looks / feels odd because of how our mirror neurons can't simulate this movement. The whole series and Lynch's oeuvre is an encyclopedic overview of different ways small "unconscious" effects can be unsettle and fascinate spectators.
I have to jump in and say I definitely see the Sonny Jim backwards blink in the scene where Cooper is staring at him and he starts tearing up. The backwards motion (SO subtle) plus the music (I think it's the same music from when the other kid gets hit in the intersection?) and Cooper getting so emotional make it pretty ominous. I feel like he knows something out of the time stream he's in, or maybe it has something to do with SJ being Dougie's kid? If he's Dougie's kid. I think we're going to get more back story yet.
I thought maybe there was another backwards blink when Sonny Jim was reading his book in bed, but then there's a follow up scene that makes me question it. Feel free to check me on that one. I'll probably watch it again to be sure.
I haven't noticed anyone else moving backwards yet, but I'm on the lookout.
I'm reminded of how the Beatles heard about kids playing records backwards trying to find messages, so they actually did record some. A message of "apple sauce" got twisted in the kids minds into "Paul is dead" - we know in 2017 he's been alive a long time since then.
Don't remember the Beatles thing, but I am aware that you can of course look too hard at things. And in this case, I need to see the footage in reverse, to see how that feels. I'm a feeling type of person. I haven't been looking for backwards things, but you can't really un-learn things you've read about either. So it's always with you in some way. Hopefully, someone will post a reverse one day. If people noticed Sonny Jim, someone has to notice this. Unless I'm wrong lol.
Sonny Jim in bed I read about, but I can't see it. From normal viewing that is.
We'll know more in time. Perhaps. =)
other Backwards things in this episode: (number)
Am I invisible in the forum or what? I mentioned that earlier in this thread.
It moves so fast in the threads at times, it's easy to miss, or even remember everything. No, you're not invisible. =) <3

wait who said that?
no your not invisable sorry must of read it and then forgot.
I think there IS something strange going on with blinking in some parts - and with eyes in general.
The scene I particularly noticed it was in Dougie's 'Make sense of it' comment to his boss. It could be something as simple as the actors being told to concentrate on blinking (which suddenly makes it more difficult 'cos you're thinking about it) but it does look the wrong way round - usually you shut your top eyelid rapidly, then it opens very slightly more slowly. If you think about it, one of the first things people do if they're trying to act like a doll (or one of those creepy ventriloquist's dummies!) is change to the snap open/snap shut blink...

That kind of reminds me of my first reaction to the extra scene from FWWM where the Palmers are practicing Norwegian (I think that was it) and when Laura is practicing her Norwegian greeting it sounded SO close to her backwards speech cadence in the lodge. I knew it wasn't but it was crazy. It was one part the language and one part her delivery and one part me being way too ready to hear it I think.
But I'm 100% sure about Sonny Jim's car blink.
I'm also sure about Sonny Jim in the car, but the only reason for that is in the links in a previous post, being able to watch it in reverse. If we could see Hawk in this case, or any other for that matter, it would be very clear which one feels "right". I don't have the software to do that I think, but perhaps it's time to look for it...
I think people are looking a bit too much into everything when the important stuff is right there. Lynch has always been open to "happy accidents" happening and leaving them in his work. I also see him as bit of a trickster who do things just to get people distracted to see if they're paying attention.

Don't know what you mean by "looking a bit too much"? Me personally am not trying to understand WHY things are backwards, cause I have stopped needing to know everything Lynch. But if I'm watching something, and notices something, why not share it? It doesn't have to mean anything, I just found it funny and even more so since it's happened before in the show.
No matter the reason for blinking backwards, what's the harm in talking about it with people that are interested? I mean, waiting for the next episode is hard work, and I for one like to talk about things.
You are of course entitled to your opinion, not saying anything about that, just trying to explain why some of us write about details like this. =)
Yes, it's not a case on 'x bit is backwards - what does that mean?' It's much more of an acknowledgement that *something* is being done in a deliberately unnatural way to cause an effect.
Whether that something is the long pauses; strange eye movements or exaggerated body positioning, I don't think anyone can dismiss it as not relevant - as we don't actually know. I'm more than happy to hear anyone's ideas (are we allowed to use 'theory' yet?? 😉 ) because quite frankly, unless that person is David Lynch it's all up for interpretation...

It is VERY much so since he doesn't like to tell us what he means. Right?
