Holy cow! Is Lynch a real anti-drug crusader in real life? Or has TP just featured the (legitimate) terrible effects of hard drugs in past (like Bobby killing a dude or... we know what happened to Laura) just because it works in the stories?
Well, this season, we saw the story about Red and the drug in town that factored into a kid's death, maybe caused Becky's husband to shoot himself, and maybe caused rashes; we also saw the 1-1-9 woman. We might've been expecting some more wrap-up to these hard-drug stories.*
Instead, we learn about the effect of MARIJUANA! Hahahahahaha!!! Ultra-high Jerry thinks his binoculars killed someone and he runs naked cross state lines cuz o' the weed. Do ya think this was a subversion of expectations? Maybe I'm just seeing the unintended.
*I think these stories, like Miriam, or all the business with the Fat Trout and Ed, said what they meant to say and were incredibly efficient in wrapping up, which left so much room for new stories and elements... like an hour of driving from Odessa, TX to Twin Peaks.
I think the Jerry stuff was satirical. Cheech and Chongish Lynchian style.
I thought that the drug subplot helped to show that the town of Twin Peaks was not the innocent place that some might think. There is corruption and other associated illegal activities like prostitution, assault, & murder that results from the drug trade. It also appeared to me that the problem was getting worse and taking a dark turn with the zombie girl and the Chinese designer drugs leading to the death of a student. I thought it mirrored the darkness that came from the fact that the climax of the story was bringing more and stronger dark forces into the world and into Twin Peaks.
I thought this, but then nothing really happened in the town with the finale. There was no big showdown between Cooper and Mister C, no woodsmen going through town, no Judy wreaking havoc. It was as though the town itself was irrelevant in the 2 final episodes.
I thought they kept the Jerry Horne subplot pretty well separate from the "hard drugs" element (which I agree was about the dark undercurrents in Twin Peaks). I just took the Jerry Horne thing as a funny-yet-telling way to update the character for 2017, like they did with Dr. Jacoby as a ranting vlogger. With weed now legal in Washington state, someone would be making a buck on it, and Jerry seems like just the guy to, er, turn over that new leaf. 😉

Why did Black Sabbath's Sweet Leaf enter me brain as I finished reading your post? ?
I think Jerry was there to provide comic relief more than anything. In the original shows he was the Uber Yuppie, with his ridiculous designer clothes and globetrotting. Funny that he's become a crusty old pothead now.

Well, maybe you couldn't think of anything appropriate by THE Nine Inch Nails. 😉
Jerry guest star in Disjointed season 2 ?
(if they order a season 2. IMO the worst show on Netflix. Ever. I was really embarassed for Kathy Bates)
Maybe he's not so much anti-drug as focused on the abuse of drug addiction?
Besides, if I remember correctly, Jerry wasn't just smoking pot, he was experimenting. I think it was mostly for comedic effect.

Wow. They must have been really stoned to be unable to walk. Jerry Horne was pretty spry doing all that running and foot attacking while high. No rescue necessary.
Scafell Pike is only 978 metres high, according to the The Guardian.
Not nearly as high as Jerry.

True. My - head like a hole - after the finale.
I'm still saying that Jerry was munchin on the local mushrooms.
I agree. There was more going on there than some marijuana. His role was hilarious though. The foot fighting, and the bad binoculars were my favorite.
