Something bad happened there.   she was smashing his face just like how bad coop and the woodsman killed people.   And looking at the sky all devilish.    Plus she had the tulpa (or was she) right outside the motel office?  So what the what Diane????  I feel like I've seen about 4 of her now.

Then he wakes up and he's Richard???  And the Palmers don't exist but he's found Laura who's Carrie with some dead guy on her couch we don't talk about?   Diane did some messed up stuff there I think she reset the universe in some bad kind of way booo Diane.

If Laura never existed and/or never murdered, then neither Cooper nor the FBI would never have been in TP in the first place - that being said, Cooper would not even know the name Laura Palmer or know her house. Basically, in my opinion this nullifies the finale

Kudos for still trying to make sense of anything!!!

I'm not sure we can blame Diane for this mess, to be honest. But I will tell you that the face smooshing made me think of Naido's eyes.

For some reason, Diane can't "face" him while they are making love. Something is "wrong." There are undercurrents of the episode 8 where you've got the two kids in love and it's all sweet, but horrible things are going on, even while that same song "My Prayer" is playing.

It was a total mindf**k and I don't know whether to admire it or slap Lynch. The conversation could certainly get lively once the shock wears off.

Because she knew after exiting the lodge/ waiting area that it wasn't the genuine good Dale.

Wait - same song from the bug/lizard/mouth girl?  I was too busy waiting for her to kill coop to notice.

No way he's bad there's 2 of her she's a sneaky b - she's got the jadoway in her.

that face smushing was bad news, she changed something.

Unless FBI Agent Dale Cooper (who was actually in reality Richard) never existed... only in Richard's head.

I din't think so. She knew that by morning, everything would be different. She was facing the end.

My take was that during the sex she was becoming Linda, but he wasn't becoming Richard. So he became increasingly unfamiliar to her and she couldn't look at him.

As Diane or as Linda?

That is odd I thought she was trying to block out his face because it looked like the person who raped her and yet he didn't feel like the person who raped her. So she couldn't look at that face. But so much going on.

If Coop is just a figment of Richard's imagination then I could have just watched Mullholland Drive instead.

My take was that she simply couldn't face the face of Coop for remember what Bad Coop did to her, even if she was in love with good Coop.  Maybe it had to do with switching over to Richard/Linda, but at that point, I was still focusing on the memory of the rape.

I too was in love with the whole season (except for the frogmoth) and I was so very disappointed in this finale. There was SO much unresolved that I really thought would be at least addressed it not resolved. Mother/Experiment/Glass Box, Audrey, Shelly/Bobby/Becky/Stephen, Red, Sarah/Leland, Judy/Laura, Jeffries imposter, just to name a few.  I also thought it a bit odd that Mr. C. was the evil foil the whole season, he totally gave me the creepy crawlies, and he was dispensed in the 1st 30 minutes of Part 17.  Strange.
