I'm only putting this information on here because there seems to be quite a few posts speculating what year Coop/Richard and Laura/Carrie(whatever you want to call them) are in. Some are saying 2008 because of a newspaper article. Some are saying 2010 because of a population sign. Some are saying other times because of how old the hotel room looks. I'm not saying these are wrong(lots of possibilities in this series..it's all a dream!) but these would rely on Lynch possibly making a large continuity error.

When he drives out of the hotel there is a 5th generation Jeep Cherokee in the parking lot. These are 2014 model years and hit the streets in late 2013. It's not hidden in the background. It's the only other vehicle in the parking lot on that side of the motel.

If you believe it's earlier I guess you could posit that once he pulled out of the parking lot he went through another '430 portal' before picking her up or possibly drove through it at some point on their drive back.

You could also posit that the scene of him leaving the motel isn't even directly before the diner or picking her up. It is strange that when he leaves both the hotel and diner the front of his car is clean. When he arrives at her house the hood and windshield of his car looks to be covered with dirt, markings and possibly handprints? Perhaps that's just a normal occurrence for those who drive any distance in Texas?

It is modern day. there's a late model white Ford pickup on a side street as he's driving through Odessa.

The census sign means little except it's after 2010. They change those once a decade, at best.

The newspaper means little IMHO. You can see little of it in the actual show. The stories might be suggestive, not literal. Just because there is a story relating to wind mills doesn't mean it means the first ones Odessa put up. It's just a nice touch for a prop. I think if it was meant to mean a lot Lynch would have showed more and lingered on it longer.

Anyway, that's my opinion.

Yeah I also believe it's modern time. The white Ram truck is at least a 2009 or newer..can't really make out the fascia on my tv. I just added some thoughts for those who'd still like to feel it's earlier even though there are modern vehicles in the episode.
