I honestly believe with my whole heart that David Lynch intended for Twin Peaks Season 3 to end exactly how it did.  That there would be no finality to it.  The ultimate Mobius Strip.  He had 25 years to plan how this would end, and he chose the ending he chose.  To me, there is nowhere else to go.  Lynch is in his 70s and isn't interested in filming anymore.   I believe that back in 1992, he felt that Twin Peaks wasn't finished, that he was never able to finish it the way he wanted.  And 25 years later, this is how he wanted it to end.  Laura whispering into Cooper's ear.

It's sad and devastating to me that there will be no more Twin Peaks.  But this really was the perfect way to end it, in my opinion.

I'd root less for a film and more for something like a 6-part TV series, whether for Showtime or Netflix/Amazon. I guess I have lots of fuzzy reasons for wanting that, but mainly I just think it would take that long to tell a legit Twin Peaks story that would feel complete to a modern audience. The way entertainment works now, a two-hour movie no longer feels adequate to delve back into a place as rich and confusing and maddening as Twin Peaks.

But I think you're right that The Return updated us on some of our old friends well enough. Bobby and Shelly had a kid and then split up - oh and Bobby's now a cop. Norma and Ed got together. Dr. Jacoby has a second career as a wild-eyed vlogging huckster - and so it goes. To the extent Lynch was willing to perform fan service, we got our fan service.

So now that we've caught up with the "old crowd," a next installment could be much more focused on whatever story it decides to tell. We don't need to jump around to see what Shelly or James or Jerry is up to (even though I think Jerry scored one of the comic highlights of all time with his "bad binoculars!" scene). We wouldn't need a cast of, like, nine-thousand.

I'm hoping that strikes Lynch as an enticing prospect: to cut the sprawling, extraneous stuff (brilliant as some of it was) and just tell whatever batshit story seems to spring from where he left us. We'll all be furious, but we'll love it.

I agree. Episode 18 had a bit of a Hitchcock vibe to it. I'm ok with that. Wouldn't mind seeing more.

I think (fear) you're probably right, but I'll offer a slightly softer take. I think Lynch feels great about himself if this is the end. I think he did say everything he had to say as of 18 months ago, or whenever production wrapped. He's absolutely not counting on having the show "picked up," to use a phrase that seems oddly quaint and out-of-place in the context of... all this. He's not sitting there cackling about how his maddening cliffhanger will surely leave them wanting more (bwahaha!!!).

But I also wouldn't be so sure that he's done with this career. Creative people get ideas, and they don't come much more creative than David Lynch. I doubt he could stop dreaming up more mind-bending threads for the Twin Peaks universe if he tried.

So I don't actually think he's slammed that door. I take Showtime and Kyle MacLachlan at their word that there haven't been discussions. But if the idea is sparked... and the demand is there... and the offer is right... I'm still going to say it's a "maybe."

Sonia, I hope you're right.  I really really do.  I just see Lynch staying at home on Senalda Road, painting, painting and doing more painting.  He is so creative, and his type of creative energy never dies, until well, the artist does.  And his constant chain smoking won't help matters, but maybe his transcendental meditation will.  But I so hope you're right that one day, in the not too near future, that he wakes up and calls Kyle Maclachlan and Mark Frost and says...."Meet me tomorrow at Bob's Big Boy...I just caught a BIG fish....we're going back to Twin Peaks!"

Let's get Kyle his Emmy, and see what that does.

I agree with many people on this forum that there is compelling evidence to suggest Lynch will end the series with 3 seasons. That being said, although art is "art for art's sake",  we should all remember that the works of Michelangelo were commissioned, and although I am not comparing Lynch to these masterpieces, in a way, Lynch will a master craftsman in his own medium, and thus, like any artist, should be open for "expansion" upon commissions. This is just a fancy way of saying I think probably in his mind "it's open."

My 2 cents is that if he and Frost can pop a few ideas in their collective minds, they will go for the 4th season. Whether they have ideas, or may be thinking about them is anyone's guess. I suspect they do. I feel like there are too many open threads in Season 3 to be totally coincidence.

I keep telling myself that it's over, but when I hear a really good argument for why it wouldn't come back for a fourth season my heart sinks.   So I know, deep down, I don't want it to be true and I'm going to keep a little bit of hope alive no matter how far fetched it is. ;_____;

I would like - no, LOVE - more Twin Peaks. One more season? Infinite seasons? Yes please.

But lets be realistic. How much more is there to see / say / show?

James Hurley - A Man And His Music

Tales Of The Green Fist

Lucy Gets A Cellphone

The Adventures of Andy's Chair

On The Road With Wally

Dude, Where's My Foot?

Home Defense Tips - A Vegas Accountant's Story

Battling Bud and the Lucky 7 Lads

Seriously, though, I'd watch just about any Twin Peaks movie or tv show.

I'll be very surprised if they announce a season 4. I just can't see it happening.

I feel like Lynch/Frost have completed the series how they want it to conclude. With a lot of mystery and no concrete answers - an enigma.

I'd love a season 4. But I just can't see it happening.

The Return was in Lynch and Frost minds in 2014, and probably before.

Then there is 2015 and months of struggle with Showtime.

Filming : september 2015 to the end of the year and additional scenes in 2016.

2016, a whole year of post-production.

2017, months of promo and finally on the air in may.

If they can find another deal with Showtime, how many years before watching another season or mini-serie ?

Lynch is not a young man but he has a young daughter and after spending so many times with TP, I guess that family is number one priority for him.

Meanwhile :

Well said. Being an artist isn't incompatible with commercial incentive - which we could also just call "opportunity." If a network/platform makes an attractive offer for more Twin Peaks and there's an audience for it, is Lynch compelled to turn up his nose because "his vision is complete" and "he must be true to his art?" If he's sick of doing it or really has no more ideas, that would be one thing. But I'm guessing Lynch has no shortage of ideas that could become more Twin Peaks if the circumstances were right.

I have absolutely no clue if the show will be back, but I think people are being a little quick to put words in Lynch's mouth about how it simply must end here because of some high-flown assumptions we're all making about his commitment to artistic purity. Hell, for all we know he had an awesome nightmare last night and there was 12 more hours of material in it. 😉
