This is a bit ridiculous, but I'm just throwing this out there because I'm totally in the camp that thinks the more crazy, outlandish, weird theories we can come up with, the more fun a discussion we can have!!
Is it possible that the weird sex scene in the motel, where Diane pushes into Dale's face is a ritual in which she somehow inhabits Dale for reasons not yet revealed to us?
Possible evidence:
- In Twin Peaks spirits often inhabit other bodies: BOB inhabited Leland, an owl, and Dale himself. There is some spirit who may or may not be Judy inhabiting Sarah Palmer. It is suggested Laura is buried deep within Carrie.
- The styling of Diane clearly represents the red room, suggesting this red hair Diane is actually some kind of red room spirit. This spirit is already hidden inside, or somehow transforms from Naido, so we already know she can in fact be inside another body.
- 2 birds, 1 stone: Diane and Dale are merging into 1 body.
- Dales weird behaviour in Odessa could be a mix of the two personalities.
- Diane and Dale's car journey: Diane keeps asking if Dale is sure he wants to go through with a plan that has risks. They says things may be different after. They kiss one last time because they won't be able to kiss after going through the portal and then merging. All of this discussion could actually be discussing them discussing a plan to merge.
- Diane disappears in the morning. Dale calls out to her, which admittadly does throw a question mark on this idea, but then we also have Carrie who is not aware that maybe Laura is inside her, and also Leland was sometimes unaware that Bob was inside him. It was later revealed to us when Dale finally woke up that he was inside Dougie all along and had been aware of everything that was going on, even though we the audience never really saw evidence of this. This is a complete long stretch but maybe towards the end of the episode when Dale is acting weird in the street, it is because Diane is coming to the surface at the same time Laura is surfacing in Carrie.
- The second Diane outside the motel. I have no idea. Is this a tulpa to replace Diane while the real spirit is inside Dale? Is it a Diane from the future watching them? Was there actually a second Dale and Diane waiting at the motel, and when Dale entered the motel check-in area the double of Dale knocked him out and replaced him while the double of Diane kept watch outside? So then when Diane has sex with the Dale double in the motel she realises something is not quite right but is too late to stop it?
- They both seem to be aware that some kind of ritual needs to take place. Dale has the info on how it is done.
- Season 2 ended with Dale being inhabited by a spirit, why not season 3 as well?
A simple motivation for the merging: perhaps Dale will forget the memory of Laura and everything else when they go through the portal. But a Diane inside him may be able to remember. I just think about how Dougie was a blank personality thay seemed to have no memories, yet Dale inside him remembered everything.
Disclaimer: In all the theories we have I kind of believe that at 430 miles they pass into a neutral area containing the motel. This motel is a kind of hub connecting the different realities/time periods. You enter a room, fall asleep, realities shift while you sleep, then when you wake up and leave the room you are now in the place you want to be. So Dale and Diane are still Dale and Diane up until they enter and fall asleep.

Dale was never inside Dougie though. Dougie was a Tulpa. Real Dale just wasn't 'all there' and had lost his memories when he came out of the socket.
That's true. But when Dale does wake it up, it is suggested he was conscious of everything that was happening to him, like he was always there in the background as a fully-aware passenger, watching somehow as the more basic brain-fried character that everyone refers to as "Dougie" was at the forefront going through his thing!
