So I found this theory someone posted on Twitter....(see attached pic of text) -
Is this why Laura's photo we saw in S3 in the Sheriff's station - when Bobby sees her picture and cries - has no frame??! Because Sarah smashed it up in ep 17?
It strangely makes some sort of sense!!!
Thoughts?!!?
Here's the pic I'm talking about - why did it look like this - no glass or frame? I thought it weird at the time....
Although....a photo of Laura's body is in that same ep as when Bobby sees the photo...so S3 did ref a 'dead' Laura here

I guess this is one logical explanation of the "Return" series. Also explains the weird plot involving Steven and Becky Briggs -- incoherent when they are being watched chronologically, but once you unpack their timelines, it all makes sense.
Or this could be the interpretation of a fan who wishes a happier ending provided in Episode 17 compared to the weird, unsatisfying ending of Episode 18. Make it what you believe, I suppose, and I guess this what Lynch would've told us as well 🙁

This would be a great theory, but I don't think it really fits. It's clearly older Dale that saves Laura in the woods. And while they might not have specifically said "dead Laura" in S3, EVERYTHIING else in the town of Twin Peaks lines up to nicely to be an alternate timeline. Major Briggs' dream about Bobby, Coop going missing, the silent drape runners... Hell, an FBI agent would not have come to town for a missing girl, so Coop would have never been in town.
Well... maybe. But there could've been any number of those photos floating around. It just looks like a photo that was taped to a piece of cardboard so it wouldn't get bent or wrinkled in the evidence file.
I don't think it really fits, not with Sarah Palmer a permanently grieving wreck (unless you interpret her state differently... which I'm sure you can) and Bobby Briggs bursting into tears at the sight of Laura's picture....
But it would explain one small thing: Who was making noise in Sarah's kitchen!
Not really on board, but theories are fun and, seriously, almost anything is possible.

A quibble, but wasn't the FBI called in because Ronette Pulaski wandered across the state line? Even if Laura was uninvolved, Ronette's assault still could've been linked to Teresa Banks's murder, which might've brought in the FBI eventually.....
Yeah, getting into the weeds here. This dumb train of thought does make me think about the other victims though. I get, from the Lodge scenes, that Laura was somehow special... but if two other girls get attacked (and maybe someone else in Laura's place) is there really much less evil at work here? (Probably should stop asking questions. My brain hurts.)

Nobody knew Ronette was connected to the Bank's murder until Coop found the letter under her nail. It was the murder that caught the attention of the FBI. That, combined with Ronette crossing state lines and being beat up, brought in Coop. No dead Laura, no Coop.
Theories are fun, but that one is very thin and feels like someone trying to justify the ending he/she wanted instead of the one we got.
