I had a similar idea. The Richard was the real identity and the others the dream. That would square with Mulhulland Drive.  Also, Coop and Diane's lousy sex scene reminded me of Dougie and Janie-E's. It's almost like the latter is the wish fulfillment of some dude who just passively lays there.

Yeah... this is really good.  Maybe Dougie, Evil Coop, and Dale are all variations of who Richard either thinks he is or who he wants to be.... given the moment.  I think Richard has done some really bad stuff (murder of a teenage girl perhaps??) and so he has created Evil Coop in his mind.  Dale is the super smart FBI guy.  Dougie is the confused guy who hasn't a clue on stuff.  Diane is his imagining that Linda has stayed with him instead of leaving him after an affair.
