I guess if you're trying to create more mysteries than can ever be answered in a future hypothetical season, one way of doing it is the way they did. Coop alters history by trying to save Laura and the entire show may have been erased. What is this, Xmen Future Past?

I think Bob's annihilation (if that actually occurred) was what made it possible for Cooper to be able to rescue Laura. However, according to the logic of the show, both a Twin Peaks in which Laura is murdered and one in which she isn't  arguably exist (and even more than just those two).

Very good question.

My best answer: Leland was still guilty (with the help of BOB) of a lot of bad things he'd done to his daughter. So, in this new retconned version, no, he didn't kill Laura. But he'd done a lot of bad stuff to her, regardless.
