I think it's safe to say Cooper wants to close the Laura Palmer case having lived inside of it and the lodge for over 25 years... he's beyond obsessed it's literally his life's work....

Richard and Linda .....

its as if Cooper sacrifices himself to the lodge once again by driving past mile 430

I got the sense that the whole thing was part of a long plan, the Fireman's plan.  But as the last two episodes progressed, I found myself wondering, what is the goal?
