Episode 18 should be renamed "Filler and 20 minutes of Story"
It was NEVER about the story.....
I know.
It was "Richard and carries road trip"

I respectfully disagree.
I vehemently second.
That's fine.
There's plenty of lynch fans who will simply gobble this up bc lynch put it out there.
There's also many who are neutral or just peaks fans who watched that wondering how much of a finale needs to be dedicated to a car ride.
What more did you want to see?
To be honest, I'd have been 100% content with it ending after 17.
Coop losing Laura's hand would have been a perfect cliffhanger.
Episode 18 felt like another angle being forced into an episode, where half the episode (literally) as wasted film time (road tripping).
More than that. I've been dedicated to this season, this forum has been filled with my posts of praise. I got a little impatient when Coop wasn't coming back to us, but all right, he finally did. But honestly, I just can't believe what a let-down this ending was. I was not expecting for all the details to have pretty bows on them, I know David's work too well for that. But this was just terribly disappointing. I certainly hope we got another season with a few more issues worked on.
I made a thread where I'm openminded and willing to hear out what people took from that in an effort to appreciate the finale more.
Feel free to reply and give some insight.

Saying "it's art, there's nothing to get" isn't what I'm looking for though. I'm looking for tangible insight into the finale episode.
The car travel scenes created a feeling of discomfort and paranoia. Something was wrong with Cooper. He lacked his recent animation and self control. He was grimacing like Mr. C. I think he is infected.

I think the brigth-eyed, full-of-wonder, damned fine coffee Dale was a dream that ended when they crossed the 430 line.

Fair enough. I felt like the last half of part 18 was a sort of epilogue that was intended to confound instead of further answer.

I view both realities as real, just different.
Somewhere online tonight I read a description of where Cooper and Diane went to, and can't remember the exact wording of it, but it made perfect sense. Basically, they both knew that things would be different when they crossed over, and they were.
I don't think anything was a dream, per se, though I do feel like we saw some alternate realities, especially the last place where Cooper ended up.
I think the Fireman had a plan --- Richard & Linda, 430 -- but that it fell apart. Diane/Linda changed too much and couldn't go through with it (or just became too much of a different person). Cooper was still Cooper, but also changed just enough that he didn't act the same as he used to. He was still well-intentioned, and wanted to complete the Fireman's mission: that of Richard & Linda returning Laura to her home, which would defeat Judy/the forces of evil (two birds, one stone).
Unfortunately, things fell apart. I do believe that the Tremonds (Dark Lodge entities) obviously intervened and, well, Cooper's now stuck.
