Remember these last words from Cooper when he went in the door at the basement of Great Northern, he left Diane and Goron outside, Gordon said "will be thinking of you Cooper".

He actually met Diane by the curtain call after that.  I believe the curtain call is appearing the same place as 253 yards from Jack Rabbits.

This is the same place whee they found Naido(Diane) earlier. So maybe this should be investigated 😀

Also remember, it was when Cooper realized Naido/Diane in the Sheriff Station, it all collapsed, he just got the sad face, and coopers face came appearing in the background.

I think he at this point realized that the loop was ended with another fail, and he had to try another one.

A you can see, Cooper is not very happy to see Diane again in none of the scenes, he just try to pretend.

It looks like there is some miscmatch between Diane and Cooper.

There might be something to that! I guess like most people, I've been thinking of that along the lines of the show-biz/theatrical context. Some people think they "broke the fourth wall" in the end; some think this was just a smaller wink of awareness that they know they're on TV. I thought it might just be a figurative way of saying "See you when this is all over." Although the phrasing seems very deliberate to be taken that lightly.

But then you posted that picture. Wow - he really does look like a performer who's just stepped offstage - or maybe onstage. It almost feels too striking to be an accident.

I wondered if it makes sense for Coop to say this to both Gordon and Diane, when Diane was the only one he "saw at the curtain call" - so I rewatched the scene. You can't tell for sure, but it looks like he could be addressing that statement only to Diane. Gordon gives her a look like, "Wait, do you know what means? 'Cause I don't." And it looks like maybe she does. Hard to tell. Coop certainly seems to have an awareness of what's coming next.

It all seems to back up the idea that I and others have gotten to in other ways: That the scene in the Sheriff's Station, and then probably the scene right after it leading up to the door, are actually the end of a loop that's played out before - and it restarts when Cooper goes through that door.

Good obervation!

I thought the same when I watched it but that is Glastonbury Grove, the spot where Cooper entered in the Original Series. Not the spot near Jackrabbit's Palace. That spot goes to where the Fireman is, not the Red Room. As far as Cooper's demeanor towards Diane there my theory is that is 1989 so the Diane there is from that time.

I don't think they'd ask us to believe that 50-year-old Laura Dern is the Diane from 1989. For all the things that were totally gonzo about this show, it was very honest about aging and mortality, so I just don't see it.

I've posted about this on other threads, but here's my opinion in a nutshell. I think this reunion outside the red curtain is the first meeting between Coop and Diane since he went into the lodge 25 years ago. They haven't seen each other in a very long time, and they're not sure what to expect - especially since the last time Diane saw a version of "Coop," he was Mr. C. and he raped her. It's all very hesitant and filled with pained memories.

I think the much happier reunion they have in the Sheriff's Station is after they've managed to come back from their "Richard and Linda" phase, and they're overjoyed to greet each other as themselves again.

I don't think Lynch would care at all if it serves his purpose using 50 year old Dern there. Just adds to the mystery.

I don't see how they are coming back from Richard and Linda phase there as it's only Diane coming back.

Sorry, bad wording: I just meant that they've already experienced the Richard and Linda phase. They clearly went their separate ways after that - following Linda's note - but somehow they've both now managed to reenter their original dimension and be Coop and Diane again. I think this is the first time they're seeing each other after that, and they're pretty happy to find they both made it back in one piece.

For me it's a big clue when Coop asks, "Do you remember everything?" - as in, "even the stuff we experienced when we were different people?"

Anyway, that's my take. I think there might already be as many theories as there were viewers. 😉

I think parts of the Coop / Diane story are set in 1945 - episode 8 gives you the date for two scenes when you watch it synched to episode 18. This ties in with the retro car vs the new car when Richard leaves the hotel.
