So Coop went back in time through that door to save Laura. He stops her from going to her death in the train car, and thus reality is altered from that moment forward. Or perhaps 'Judy', or whatever the dark force is, senses that Coop is saving Laura, so she intervenes and snatches Laura from him [hence she disappears in the woods], and she creates a new reality where many things are different, in order to thwart Cooper. Judy puts Laura in the new reality, and a then Cooper and Diane drive to that new reality, resulting in Diane getting swept away with a new identity. [Linda].

Cooper finds Altered Laura, drives her home, and just as Laura starts to remember who she is, the reality collapses, she screams, and everything goes dark. Also, the name that the homeowner gives them, Tremond, as well as the name of the previous owners, Chalfont, are both names given to the old woman and her grandson.

That seems to make some rough sense. It has some reminiscence with Mulholland Drive, too - the character living within the moments of her nonexistence, then "awakening" to reality.

My first thought was that the murdered "Laura" was a tulpa and that the White Lodge had intervened somehow to create her alternate timeline. But a lot turns on whatever that noise was in the woods when Cooper lets go of her hand. Where have we heard it before?

Like the idea but going to rewatch tomorrow before I'd comment too much.  There is a strong tie to the fact the fireman told him to remember 3 things earlier.  All 3 seemed to play a role at the end.  This leads me to start to believe 1 of 2 things - episode 18 was an alternate dimension or Coop really left the lodge at that point he ran into Diane in the woods.

However, if Laura never existed and/or never murdered, then neither Cooper nor the FBI would never have been in TP in the first place - that being said, Cooper would not even know the name Laura Palmer or know her house. Basically, in my opinion this nullifies the finale

Agree... and maybe more like Mulholland Drive than we might first think.  Was there ever a real FBI Agent Dale Cooper or was he actually just Richard who is in some state dreaming like this.  Maybe similar to Betty in Mulholland Drive who was dreaming most of what we saw while laying in bed contemplating suicide.

My first gut thought was that Richard and Linda (Diane) were lovers like the young couple shown in 1956 and something really bad happened which made her leave him.  But lots to digest and analyze here.....  Not even sure that there ever was a real "Laura Palmer".

But in this world, alternate realities seem to exist, and we have lodges that exist outside of time. So the real world may change, while people who are connected with the black lodge could remain constant. Cooper and Diane seemed to enter the new reality [if one exists] after driving 430 miles.

Your explanation plus the attached one sums up my thoughts. I don't see how "nullifying" this finale is even a thought. Chalfont (who I think may be Mother/the spirit possessing Sarah)/Tremond are mentioned, Cooper seems to become clearly aware that something isn't right and then Laura hears Sarah's scream and becomes aware of who she actually is/was. I was upset with the last episode until the final part. If there was a happy, all ends tied finish it wouldn't have felt right. What's next?

I don't know that we are meant to throw the baby out with the bathwater, as it were. It seems like DC and Diane made a conscious decision to seek out an alternate timeline ("cross over") for some reason. Diane seems to have been changed into Linda, but Coop seems not to have changed (he's still FBI). So just because they entered some kind of alternate timeline doesn't mean that nothing we saw in TP before  had any reality - just that there's another reality in which Laura escaped BOB's clutches somehow.

I dunno, it's a lot better than the "this is all Audrey's dream!" theories floating around before!

Coop was supposed to remember because the fireman told him "remember Richard and Linda" still unsure how the prophecy  pertains to the new direction and the two birds but I started a separate thread for that question.
