Pi$$3d that Audrey was not in finale... that viewers were baited along with the [childish?] possibility of an Audrey Coop reunion...and we were: double-friggen check.
For me her story ended when she woke up. I believe that the exact moment Cooper fundamentally changed the Twin Peaks (by preventing Laura's murder) reality she woke up in a new timeline. She was just insane or damaged enough to be in touch with the flimsy nature of realty around her. Remember, things don't happen chronologically.

He didn't prevent it, she was pulled away from him, I suspect sent back to before he interfered, and went on to her fate of dying in order to stop Bob using her body. The beginning of the show, when Coop sees Laura in the BL, she responds "I'm dead...and yet I live." then pulls back her face revealing a bright whiteness ( then too she was pulled away ). When Audrey "awakens" she is looking into a mirror and all around her is nothing but bright whiteness.
I don't think we were ever blatantly "baited" with the possibility of their reunion. We wanted it really badly but I didn't see any hints that it was inevitable. Just fans hoping desperately that Audrey would wake Cooper up early in the season, and that Cooper would wake Audrey up later in the season. Didn't happen. No bait and switch.
I say all of this being a HUGE Audrey fan and I did want to see a reunion. I still want to see a reunion. I hope they get to have another season and we get more story to tinker with. But that wasn't this story. She did get a killer last scene though, what a show stealer.
Completely disagree. We saw her body disappear from the shore. He stopped her dying at least at the moment we knew of her dying. His attempt to change time broke it. Created paradoxes within paradox. That is why she disappeared from the lodge and why Audreys reality fundamentally changes - at that exact moment.
A romance happening between Coop & Audrey in a new season may not be the vision ( if there is more ) of DL & MF, but it WOULD be a delicious in-your-face to diva LF Boyle who threw the fit back then & got her then boyfriend Kyle to get them to change the intended story.

I still think it would have been a bad decision for them to get together in the second season, LFB issues or no. I think if it was going to work it would have needed a few more seasons to really make it the right romance and not just the romance the fans wanted. Now, so many years later I would be happy with her being reunited with her "special agent" and close friend, romance or no.
