Fireman reminds Cooper to remember Richard and Linda, 430, 2 birds 1 stone.  This is shared in an attempt to help Cooper on his mission to defeat the experiment.  Sarah is the experiment and sobs angrily before and while attacking Laura's picture.  This was brought on by the defeat of Bob.  Her retaliation was to prevent her trip to the white lodge by nabbing her and hiding her in an alternative dimension.

Cooper uses the clues from the Fireman to access the right other dimension by seeking the 430 location.  He is aware there might be side effects, like a blending of realities between Richard/Coop & Diane/Linda (I see Laura's memory as another example of that).

I think his mistake is believing he would find Sarah in the same dimension waiting for them.  Laura's scream was a acknowledgement that she was starting to remember.

I'm still trying to fit together:

the change in hotel and car.

the seemingly change to history of Laura's death.

the Coop over face during some scenes

JP's infinity message to Coop

things we learned in my opinion:

Phillips is not a prisoner and is at least partially good just like Mike.

Nothing to "abuse" here.  Thanks for articulating these thoughts.  I tried and failed to post something similar this morning...ended up deleting it

I'm planning a rewatch within the next 24 hours and will keep your points in mind, along with some other interesting ones I've read today.

Truck you.

That's all the abuse I have to give.  It's a pretty well devised theory.

I don't worry to much about Cooper's unCoop attitude in dimension X.  Everyone could be a monster and attempt to stop you in your mission.  Must be on your toes and trust no one.  This fact was more clear to me when he seemingly dismissed the dead guy in Laura's home.

Very good point.

You know that had to smell really bad.

I think Coop's changing attitude is just a sign that his constant battle with these forces is slowly breaking his spirit.
While he is still good, and will not quit trying to save Laura and the world, the chirpy talkative Coop has been worn out by his constant defeats at the hands of evil.
I viewed it as a 'right, time to get serious, no more fucking about.'

Agreed.  Again, I think he's in some kind of reality/pocket dimension/dream of the Mother's making.  You have to believe that everything is potentially hostile there.

I've started my second watching of episode 17 and caught a couple of minor elements I missed or didn't point out the 1st time through:

  • Andy's weird "It's important" statements to Lucy were related to the phone call.  I think with everything else going on I didn't have time after the fact to link those items.
  • I got the feeling that the drunk was arranged by the fireman much like Reggie and James being there felt that way too (even Nadio).
  • The entire setup at the police department was a trap designed by the fireman.  This, I think, also foreshadow's the fact that beating a entity on the level of the fireman or the mother is much more difficult than finding out where they are.
  • The police department was a backup to the original 'kill Bob/Evil Coop' trap set for him at the rock location.  That initial trap was organized by Briggs and Phillips.
  • Briggs, at least his head, is now a good spirit in the white lodge with the fireman (fitting end for the best good guy in Twin Peaks).
  • Phillips is not in a prison or trapped.  I assume he is of the spirit plane, much like Briggs, but in a different state/level.
  • Phillips location is not the black lodge, but another location you can reach by traveling dimension-r-us transport system (the convenience store location is another traveling port).
  • Gordon had knowledge of Phillips' fate as a spirit.  This suggest to me, over the last 25 years, they had been working together before recent events.
  • We can now confirm Nadio was in fact a good guy, earlier I was in the camp that questioned her much as I do with every character.
  • As above, the same could be said for Mike.  I always was doubtful of his good guy facade, but now I must admit he had seen the face of god and found a better path

This is as far as I gotten at this point.  still have a little of an hour to re-watch, wanted a placeholder for my thoughts.

I believe Cooper was blind to everything except his obsession.  The letter from Diane didn't bother him as much as it should, and he dismissed it soon after.  Even the names Richard and Linda didn't trigger any memories.  He had a vague sense of something when he walked out of the motel but again, he just dismissed it.  Never even noticed the different car.

Later, at the diner, the number of guns he took from the guys there changed and that never gave him pause.  In fact, that entire scene showed how much he'd shut down inside.  He was almost like a robot.

The dead guy in Laura/Carrie's room didn't bother him as much as it should; he was entirely focused on taking Carrie to Twin Peaks.

Once at Laura's family home, the names of the owner and previous occupant didn't trigger any memories. It was like they'd been wiped away from his mind.

By now, Cooper probably doesn't remember who he is or why he's forever trying to find Laura.

Sam,

Don't necessarily disagree with your notion.  Instead of blind direction, could it alternatively been the effects of loosing his real self in this dimension?  In other words, the more Richard he becomes, the less Cooper that remains.  We already know that traveling, let's say in planes of the non traditional sense have 1) caused memory loss, and 2) scrambled brains.

Or is it possible that what we are seeing is the evolution of Cooper INTO Mr C?

Not sure how this works in terms of doppelgangers, but could Mr C in episodes 1-17 be the future Cooper, returning to Twin Peaks to complete his mission?

We still aren't entirely sure what he was after......

Another element, Mary Reber, the actress who answered the door in the alternate universe is, in real life, the actual owner of that house.

I don't think this is just coincidental or happenstance casting on Lynch's part.

I remember living just outside of Everett for 6 or 7 years.  Use to love going by that house just to remind myself of its ties to one of my favorite tv shows.  I agree though, the use of the current owner does make me wonder if we are the dreamers and we live in the dimension that mother created!
