When Laura screamed in front of the Palmer house, she revealed the truth about the house. Before she heard her mother calling her name, there were lights on in every room. Her scream revealed the true darkness in the house. If she and Cooper continue their journey in the house, they will face the true, dark version and not a house filled with false light.

That's a wonderful read of the scene. It could've been an absolutely harrowing ending if Sarah/Judy answered the door and Coop just let Carrie/Laura enter back into the "darkness," as Sarah smiles at Coop and closes the door.
