I was rewatching Part 8 again last night and I got to the section where the Fireman creates Laura when it suddenly occured to me - what if Laura wasn't created to destroy evil but to be sacraficed to it?
If Laura was as good as Bob was evil, theoretically they should cancel each other out - a stalemate of strength. But what if Laura and her innate 'goodness' was meant to inspire others stronger than her to defeat Bob instead?
We know what Laura meant to the town of Twin Peaks - the homecoming queen, a symbol of beauty, of a sort of innocence in its way (her drug and sex related activities springing as a reaction to the abuse suffered at the hands of Leiland/Bob rather than a natural proclivity for such things ). Look at how the town mourns for its lost queen, how many tears were shed for her in in the pilot and elsewhere. The whole town turned out for her funeral - no one bothered for Teresa Banks, by comparison.
Dale Cooper becomes touched by Laura and the town, leading to the chain of events that eventually leads to the defeat of Bob. Without the sacrafice of Laura and the outpouring of emotions that caused, would this have been possible? Possibly but just as likely not. Laura had to die so Cooper could come to Twin Peaks and lead on to the defeat of Bob.
There's an obvious Christian subtext to this idea, and while I'm not a Christian and neither are Lynch and Frost as far as I'm aware, I do think it's an interesting idea and would go some way to explaining why Coop can't save the day at the end - Laura has to die. She can't be saved because that wasn't her purpose. This would also tie in some way with the talk of the Fireman warning rather than helping Cooper with his Richard and Linda clues.
I'm not trying to posit this as some sort of 'definitive' answer, but it was an idea that excited me last night and I hadn't seen it posted elsewhere (apologies if it has), and was wondering what other people think of it.
Thanks for this theory!
I like it. I myself have never really agreed with the school of thought that Laura is the essence of Good. I'm not buying it. Laura hurts a lot of people, she makes selfish choices, she lies etc. I'm not against any of those things necessarily but I just don't see how she stands for the ultimate good.
Your theory of Laura as a sacrifice as a way too lure Dale to TP is much easier for me to swallow.
