To my understanding, people are just expressing their opinions and emotions, even if it is just yaaaay or boooo, all is good if it is sincere. I think problems start when either side is trying to tell that there is something objective in either outlook (things may work for one and not work for another) and pointlessly calling out that other opinion just can't exist.
What is good in all of this - that in general this work raises emotions, if you are either more positive, either more negative - you cant just stay its all irrelevant. Feeling somehingt is better than "anything goes".

Yep. Whether you loved it, hated it or are undecided, there's no denying its impact. That's a good thing, IMO.
As I was telling somebody yesterday, it's art. You don't have to like all art. There are many fine pieces out there that I wouldn't display in my living room if somebody paid me too. But I cannot deny their existence or that they have an impact.
This show would only be a failure if the responses were "meh, it was alright. When does Ray Donovan premier?"

Haha!
I'm still not able to watch anything else at the moment (movies included). My mind drifts back to Twin Peaks.
I agree re: art. There is a ton of art out there that I appreciate for what it is, but it doesn't mean I like it.
Ah, well I'm a regular at an "Art" site and the question guaranteed to make everyone groan is the "Is it Art?" posts some people feel duty bound to make on a tediously regular basis.
I've been a professional "artist" most of my adult life. Inverted commas because what I do definitely isn't art most of the time; it's an end result of a learned mechanical skill, allied to whatever creativity I have. A lot of it has been for pay, working to a design brief, very little has been sheer creativity or self expression. That's not to say I can't or don't do sheer creativity from time to time but, at least with my own stuff, I know when it isn't art.
Other stuff... If anyone can give me a meaningful, measurable, objective definition of art, they are entitled to call themself the Lord of All Creation and Beyond. It can't be done, not even nearly. Don't even try to state art's purpose because that's digging yourself an even bigger hole. I'm not sure art has a purpose, it just is.
I like Lynch's work, I like the stuff Frost and Lynch have done with Twin Peaks. I like a lot of other work that may be called "art" but anyone who says they know whether it is or not is, quite honestly, full of shit. I know what floats my boat creatively but if it's art or not, I haven't a clue. I enjoy it anyhow.
I have a friend who says, "everything is art, but not all things are fine art." To which I reply, "what's the difference between art and fine art?" Mumble, mumble, grumble . . . Is what I hear and then ask, "So what is art anyway?" [crickets]
It's a good thing I wasn't making a grandiose, over-generalized statement about whether this was art. To me, it is art and to me, Lynch is an artist. And what I said to the person I was speaking with yesterday is exactly that. I said "To me it is art." I would have added that part if I had realized we were taking this philosophical road. 🙂
But the point was not "what is and what is art." The point was you don't have like to like everything that you appreciate as art. 🙂
I call things art and have referred to myself as an artist at various times, but don't ask me why I call "this" art and not "that" unless you're ready for a long discussion. It seems humans have an intuitive understanding of what art is, and tend to define it in their own way.
Much of the time I talk about art colloquially, not philosophically. I understood what you meant and I understand the distinction between TPTR and most television shows. Calling it art is fine by me.
I understand yer both and my comments weren't intended as criticism. I wanted to get that in just in case some other poster started pontificating about "Art".
Not the "What is art" question!!
Oh damn, now I'm thinking about Gordon Cole's drawing again. How am I supposed to get any work done today.

I did not take either as criticism. But it was out there, so I best 'splain myself.
I am pretty gutted about TPTR being over, and the brutality of its ending. Bitching and negativity is going to kill me. That does not mean sweetness and light, or no disagreement, but please, take poison elsewhere. Thank you, OP, for giving the link to those who need it.
You might have to define poison cuz I'm not very good at reading between the lines or properly interpreting for others.
The people who post on this forum are for the most part cordial and open to different ideas about the show. Compared to other forums I've been at - the old Imdb forum - the posters here are very civil and have done a good job in self policing and restraint.
Can't blame the others for creating accounts just to vent their frustration, nor those who want to express satisfaction with the finale. Emotions are still running high, but eventually, things should simmer down and we can discuss the specific issues we liked/disliked about the finale and/or the season.
The night of finale I was in the minority of people that actually wanted to discuss the finale rather than whine and a complain about it or Lynch or "the destruction of Twin Peaks." The dissenting opinion actually appears to be the one that liked the finale, not the one that dislikes it.
The opposite of "you don't get Lynch," is "no one could possibly have liked that part, the finale, etc," which I've seen bandied about.
Here, here. I don't work in an office anymore; I count fir trees on mountains. Not even any cell towers, so I only get stabs of time now and then to be involved on this forum. I, too, would have gladly discussed the finale that night, but the prevailing mood was ugly here. It felt like the (convenience store) forum. I didn't realize there were people signing up just to vent. What a strange thing to do.
A funny thing. I remember when we all went to see Blue Velvet in Chicago in the theater (when was that, wow...'86?). Half were elated. The other half, not so much. Discussions, arguments. The eternal "you don't get Lynch" got leveled from the superiors in the group--me included, I think--such a dumb thing to say. Who the hell does get Lynch! 🙂
