She throws the syncers a bone:

I'm surprised to hear such a definitive answer. The timing just seems too perfect in so many places (the way "My Prayer" syncs to the demise of doppleganger Cooper is beautiful, intentional or not). Thanks for not making me buy two copies of the Blu-Ray, though!

Maybe it's just meant to be that way even though it wasn't planned. That's pretty exciting! Like I said, I'm just hearing of it. Maybe it's something I'm not aware of - could be. I'm not infallible!

Ask her why there is no electricity sound on Lynch/Frost Productions after part 18.

it's over with already. Answers come in after the end though.

Seems un-Lynchian to give such an unequivocal reply. Why be such a killjoy and ruin the mystery like that?

I can see wanting to debunk the idea that there's some secret decoder ring that reveals the answers. Might seem like sort of a parlor trick to Lynch & Co, like playing a Beatles record backward. For purposes of PR, awards, and personal pride, I get that they'd want to keep the conversation on what's actually in the show, not something that's apparently a fan invention and could make them look gimmicky.

Or maybe they care about us after all and they just don't like to see us heading down a dead-end. 😉

(Never felt strongly about the "sync" theory either way, so just trying to see it from their perspective.)

I expected to hear something sooner actually. There were blogs going with the idea it might have been meant to be that way. If they remained silent major news orgs might of thought it had credence.  If they were ever to comment on quashing a fan idea it would be about something technical like this.  Everyone knows how particular Lynch is about controlling how his work is displayed as it reflects on him. If Lynch had actually intended something like this he would have presented it that way from the start. No one would need to figure it out.

I watched the sync twice, both side by side and overlay. There were a few interesting spots, but just that. Most of it is doesn't come close to belonging side by side. And the idea Lynch meant to show things side by side and then have blank space or worse the credits on one side? Just ridiculous.  I'm sure Lynch is fine with people doing what they wish if it makes them happy. But to have people suggest that is what he wanted to the point they are wondering if it would be on the dvd? Ludicrous.

Not to be harsh but Part 17 is not the end of the season. 18 is. Just deal with it.

Lol - you seem pretty keen to disparage 'the syncers' as you call them...

I obviously missed the memo stating that parts were 'meant' to be watched that way.
Some parts work really well together - others don't match up at all.   Nobody's making you watch them...

I had made comments in another thread about it saying why I didn't think it was actually meant to be that way and had people telling to to go ahead and be oblivious to what was obviously the true way to watch the show. Another was wondering if the sync version would be on the DVD since it was obviously meant to be that way. Not for all, but for a distinct number of people they actually thought this is what was intended.

Some of it is interesting, from curiosity standpoint.  As for me? People can watch it however they like. Seriously. If you find something interesting or unusual? Post it. I'll read it.  But don't be surprised if people say "Nah, they probably won't include free rolling papers with the DVDs just because some parts are really cool to watch when you're high."

To stop people wasting their time and deluding themselves?

I'm going to get laughed out of town for this and I mean it with the utmost respect for Sabrina but I don't think she would have had a need-to-know on the sync thing. As soon as Lynch, Frost or Duwayne Dunham come out and explicitly state that the sync thing is a coincidence and not intentional, I'll accept it immediately but until then I consider it a very strong possibility that the writing and editing was done with sync in mind.

Greg, I'd read her answers to all the questions in that AMA. It's not a lot. Less than 100 short question and answers. All the ones relating to what her job is and what her involvement was on this Season and with David Lynch. The let me know if you still feel the same.

Hi Em, I read them all. I didn't see anything in there that makes me think she would need to know about editing intentions.

From what i've read she's positive that DL didn't make ep17 ou ep18 to be seen side by side. She also states that she doesn't know everything, and it makes sense she's not directly related with the editing nor with the writing process.

So from one hand i do believe that it's true that the two episodes are not meant to be watched in sync. I read the whole theory, and many things just seem like happy coincidences.

However, i do believe that since time and dimensions are all mixed up, that DL edited the two episodes for the final 10 minutes so that the scenes could somehow mirror what had happened in the other. Specifically i'm pretty positive that the scene that Sarah Palmer is stabbing Laura's picture is edited with the scenes in Part 18. It just fits too well. If it's just a coincidence, it's the mother of all coincidences because all the talking and happenings blend very well together, even the ending of the episode 18 in relation with episode 17.

But that doesn't mean that the two episodes are meant to be watched in sync, only the final scenes are supposed to mirror each other in each episode and that DL did edit that way on purpose like a clue, but not as the definitive way to watch the episode, because if he did that A LOT of viewer would feel cheated, since you're not supposed to have an instruction manual on how to watch the episodes, presented one week after by the fans who decoded the puzzle. But you can and DL always did, put clues everywhere, on how to interpret what's going on, and the last 10 mins i'm convinced that they are, since it just fits too well to be a coincidence. But again, you can watch those two scenes without being and sync and just thinking they are supposed to mirror each other, so her response is still valid from this point of view.

I agree with much of what you express there, DaleJon. Obviously, the Definitive way to watch the episodes is to watch them individually. There is so much in the frame that if you're not paying full attention it's so easy to miss dozens of things. And each one is crafted to be a complete and powerful viewing experience on its own.

For me personally though, I found several "mother of all coincidences" which I've listed throughout the sync threads. I should really sit down and write up a full list so people can review it all and make up their own minds. My absolute favourite sync is the scene in episode 18 where Richard / Coop speaks to Carrie / Laura on her doorstep. If you have synced episode 8, at that moment we have the creation of the Laura orb and the organ chords that rise up almost randomly if you watch 8 on its own are exactly timed to react to the conversation in episode 18. It's as if they took the music from episode 18 and put it into episode 8.

The Fireman is lying down with golden liquid coming out of his head, meanwhile at Carrie's place there is a body lying on the chair with blood coming from it's head. Then the Laura orb is floating down to Earth in episode 8 and at that exact moment in episode 18, we have a shot of Carrie / Laura with a single headlight behind her like a glowing orb. Moments like that work so ridiculously well that it seems crazy to believe it wasn't intentional.

I agree that the sync is not 100% tight at all times, but I can't even begin to imagine how difficult it would be to properly write and execute an exact match without having to alter the script unnaturally. Maybe all of this is just one big crazy coincidence but even if it is unintentional and Lynch is giggling at how nuts people like me are with these crazy theories, it has enhanced my enjoyment of the series intensely and I already loved it all to begin with! Even episode 18! There are no losers in this game, just more ways to enjoy the experience.

This was the blog that seemed to originate the sync theory (at least the first place I saw it). Check out the headline.

https://medium.com/@onantiad/episodes-17-18-of-twin-peaks-the-return-are-meant-to-be-watched-in-sync-81352ce38e8

I don't really have a problem with people deciding they want to watch the episodes in sync especially if it helps them get some meaning out of it, and they should hold onto whatever interpretation they get from it. I don't believe there are right or wrong interpretations. But unfortunately a lot of people think their interpretations have to be accepted by others, and saying something like "the episodes were meant to be seen together" essentially advocates doing something that most people would not have the ability to do if people weren't nice enough to edit them that way and post them online. It makes no sense for filmmakers to intentionally assemble something this way. Especially since lawyers like to get these things taken down anyway.

I see some above are doubting whether Sabrina Sutherland would be "in the know" if the episodes are intended to be watched together. Well she's definitely more "in the know" than any of us... obviously she had more involvement in the production and post production than anyone other than Lynch and arguably had the second biggest job on the production (no disrespect to Frost, but by all accounts his job was largely completed after the scripts were done. He was writing his book when the show moved into production). If there's anyone other than Lynch who would know about this it would be her.

I'm an editor, I've edited a couple of documentaries and a few of my own projects. Honestly the thought of editing two seperate projects that work on their own and then work when played on top of each other seems like a ridiculously daunting task. I can barely wrap my head around how one would even go about doing it, and why anyone would be so motivated to go through the trouble to do something so arduous that you don't know people would discover. I guess you could edit one episode and mark down time stamps and try and edit the other episode so certain scenes hit those time stamps... but seriously, it's enough work as it is just to edit one episode and make sure it has the flow and rhythm the filmmakers want. Lynch no doubt approaches editing differently than other filmmakers but there's no indication from anything he's done before that he'd be so interested in making the editing process that much more difficult than it already is for some esoteric purpose.

Look, if you are interested in this sync theory, you should't be invested in the idea that it was intentional or that they were supposed to be watched this way. You have the freedom to watch it this way and make your interpretations. But just understand that you are simply creating your own personal relationship with this work. There's nothing at all wrong with doing that, there's just no need to advocate it to anyone else.
