Don't they still need to go back to Jack Rabbit's Palace?

Major Brigg's scroll listed two dates. Didn't Sheriff Truman say they would go both days? Do the events of episode 16 and 17 all take place on the 2nd day, 10/2? The time on the scroll is 2:53, the same time stuck on the clock when Cooper says "We live inside a dream." I wonder, is he leading Laura near Jack Rabbit's Palace when she vanishes from his grasp? It's difficult to see because it's so dark, but it seems to make sense that he would be taking her to the spot 253 yards East of the Palace, the location of the portal, even if it was 25 years ago. Bobby said the spot had been there since he was a kid. This would have satisfied visiting Jack Rabbit's Palace on the second day. Too bad Coop and Laura didn't make it before she was snatched away from him. He did, however, prevent her murder, so she is definitely out there somewhere, and she needs to be delivered to her home. That's why he and Diane go looking for her. At least from Diane's perspective, she is trying to help Cooper. When he emerges from the Black Lodge, she truly sees how all that weird stuff on his voice recorder was actually true. She is willing to follow him and even cross over the 430 threshold with him, if it will help him find Laura. But the journey Good Cooper and Diane are on now has already been lived once by Bad Cooper and Diane. The first time around, Cooper had Bob inside of him. We assume he raped and tulpa'd Diane. He may have raped and tulpa'd a lot of people. He apparently built a huge criminal empire and made Diane his servant. But this time, Bob is no longer with him, so things go a little differently. Also, his mission has gone from a murder case to a missing person's case. Cooper and Diane have fallen in love over the years, and Cooper feels he is getting close to finding Laura. But it looks like someone else has tulpa'd Diane. So rather than Bad Cooper with Bob raping Diane, Bad Diane with someone (Judy? Naido?) is raping Cooper. Now Cooper is literally fucked. He is waking up again, sort of like when he woke up as Dougie. This time he is waking up as Richard, probably some accountant from Odessa, and using Richard's car (which has Texas plates and is covered in bird poop, not exactly Cooper's style) to try and fulfill the purpose he so desperately needs to fulfill: Find Laura and get her home. The problem is, he needs to get her home in 1989. What year is it? D'oh!

I noticed that and wondered why they didn't follow thru for the second date. It looks like Mr C went there instead,  and he was taken up and eventually disposed  of.  Apparently these instructions weren't for the sheriff and deputies. But still part of the same plan. I don't think we got much more about the other designs on Briggs note.

That is how I remember it. Not sure it's right.  Maybe it was Coopers destination with Laura that nite.

Yup, wondered that too.  Thought maybe I had misunderstood and that something would happen on 10/2 but that the sheriff boys were not required to hike their cookies up there on that date.

Then there was Mr C going through and Dale doing WHATEVER it was that Dale be doin and I just got lost and confused.

I'm pretty sure 10/2 was Mr. C was able to use the open portal.

Dale tried to take Laura to the portal the night of her death, February 23rd.

I'm kind of wondering how strict the rules on the entering of gates or portals is though, in the original series when they were just starting to flesh out this idea they made it this big conjuction that had to occur before a person could attempt to open the gate to the black lodge/red room.  In this one there are multiple portals that open up which seem distinct from the curtains that lead into the red room and they have more access but you have to be just in the right spot?  Like Bill Hasting's portal, they just went there any ol day.  And the "white lodge" portal was open two days in a row and likely would have been open that day in Feb.  It seems pretty accessible, but Briggs let them know they needed to go on 10/1 so they would be prepared for the events that would unfold the day after.

This is a tricky thing. Some portals seem so difficult to find, while others just appear easily. I think it's interesting that when Cooper became 100% awake as Dougie, he simply looked at the chair and saw Mike, and was even able to pass the ring across the divide. Could it be that Major Briggs knew Mr. C would arrive on 10/2, so he arranged for Naido to arrive 1 day earlier? I think you are right! Also, I wonder, is there only one ring? Has anyone tracked the progress of the ring to verify if anyone is wearing it at the same time?

I was thinking exactly the same thing - they were definitely supposed to go there twice. I wondered if because of their amnesia after the portal opened and Andy going in there, they forgot!!

I'm pretty sure there's only one ring. I'm thinking of when Ray dies and ends up in the Red Room, you see Mike replace it on that stand, just like when Dougie dropped it, and it's still the only one.   The tough thing to track is how it moves from person to person.  The Return (and Fire Walk With Me actually...)  seems to imply that once it ends up in the Red Room again Mike is the one giving it to the next carrier.

I agree with you all.  I thought they'd go back to the portal on 10/2.  It doesn't even appear that the police were planning on it.  Something did happen at 2:53.  I remember the clock showing that time with some visual effects.  Since I haven't rewatched I forget exactly what happened, and I don't want to say with certainty, but it was either the de-Naidoing of Diane, the kiss, or the decision of Dale & Diane to depart together through the door.

Why did Naido need to be kept in a cell?  Who was supposed to be after her? Why did the fireman show Andy pictures of Laura and the Woodsmen?

Perhaps this is why Andy was putting a picnic basket in the car when Mr C showed up. They were getting ready to go.

I think they probably would have gone had Mr. C not showed up, hilarity ensued, and that dream ended.

Right before superimposed Cooper is saying "we live inside a dream"/Cooper saying he hopes to see everyone again we see the clock stuck at about 2:53. Mr C has to show up at the sheriff station around 2:30 or earlier. That isn't the time he uses the portal.
