Does he want Gordon to be the hero of the show instead, but since that's not possible he keeps Coop away for the whole season, restores him for 12 seconds to fragment him anew, then blows the whole show up at the end.
I would say no he doesn't hate KM's popularity.
No. I think he loves Kyle very much and Kyle loves him, and he considers Kyle his perfect vehicle for his vision. He is like paint or clay and David can use him in any way he sees fit to make art. Kyle doesn't mind; he's a director's dream.
No way. Kyle has always been his perfect actor and vehicle for the Lynch hero.

I would not say he hates Kyle personally. But yes I agree with your other point, he did want to self indulge himself with showtime giving him the reigns on this show. Gordon Cole at best should of been a background comedic relief character. Not the main protagonist on the show. He basically made himself in the mold of Coop from the first two seasons.
Most of Lynch/Coles scenes were meta commentary - telling the audience clues about how to watch the show, making people repeat important lines, spoofing himself as Coops boss (the director of the show). It might have been too much but I personally loved every bit of it. My favorite bit has become the "you've gotten soft" , "not where it counts". He is not simply making a sexual innuendo, he is warning about the craziness he is about to show everyone - In case you thought I got old, I'm about to blow all your minds.

Does Lynch hate Laura Dern's popularity?
The fallacy in the question is that it assumes David Lynch wrote the story by himself. He did not. Kyle had been prodding Lynch to revisit Twin Peaks for years. He played 4+ characters in TPTR; showed his maturity as an actor and displayed incredible diversity. He may have been upstaged by Grace Zabriskie a few times, but not many wouldn't be. He definitely wasn't upstaged by Lynch. What was your question again?

They also live quite close to one another, for memory.
I'm not really sure where this 'Gordon as protagonist' theory came from.
He's more of an information machine than he is a hero. He also plays absolutely no part in the finale and is far from the center of the show.
It's almost like you guys are simply annoyed he got more than a fleeting cameo role, and have somehow confused that for self-indulgence.
Also, he's not really anything like Coop in terms of mannerisms.
And if he hated MacLachlan's popularity, why give him 5 different roles, use his face from all promotion and end every episode with 'Starring Kyle MacLachlan.'?
Nonsense theory this one.
No, but giving the real Cooper 20 lines of dialog in a 18-hour production was a serious misstep.
Have you never had a close 'friend' who is actually jealous of you? Who's living this fairy tale of purely intentioned beings?

He NEEDS Kyle to make the show go. Whether he WANTS Kyle is a different thing. Or whether he is secretly jealous is another thing too. Only one person knows for sure! And it's not the Fireman.
In other news, it's been revealed that auteur filmmaker David Lynch was the real culprit behind the hacking of Democratic National Committee servers. Federal authorities began closing in on Lynch after information technology professionals discovered this line of code in the program used to illegally access the servers.
