soo dale went to twin peaks to investigate the murder of laura palmer. there he fell madly in love with annie. then he gets trapped in the lodge for 25 years.
when he comes back and sees diane he is madly in love with her? whats that about? did i miss/forget something???
If you missed or forgotten something, so did I!
I'm absolutely astonished at the Cooper/Diane relationship. In the old series, they're colleagues and nothing more (or at least nothing suggests they're something more), and then Cooper meets Annie and falls in love with her. And now, all of a sudden, it turns out that Cooper and Diane were lovers. WTF?!
The motel scene was boring and totally pointless, too.

My take on this is that Dale and Diane had some plan cooked up a long time earlier (which she remembers in the bar). When she said they only kissed once before, I think this is a way to know if it was the real Dale Cooper and not Bad Cooper.
I think Real Dale created the Tulpa Diane. She said "Cooper, the one and only" after kissing him and he asked if she "remembered everything". I think this refers to their plan.
The sex in the motel room is to release some sort of sexual energy to help Dale cross to where he needs to be. Diane covers his face up because she remembers the rape by Bad Cooper.
It was pretty obvious something was going to go horribly wrong. While they were in the sack, there was the dark brooding music behind the Platters' song. In fact, the song itself was enough of a clue.
My own idea is that Cooper tried too hard to do the right thing and didn't think it through to the consequences of his actions. He should have let Laura stay dead, tragic though it is. Then again, if there's an answer to all that, I'm happy to be proven wrong.

The character of Annie was created when LF Boyle threw a fit & got her then boyfriend Kyle M. to pressure them to kill the intended romance with Coop & Audrey in the story.
For FWWM they had originally considered having a scene with Coop interacting with Diane, but that idea go thrown out ( & the film had to be cut down anyway in length ).

Well, maybe it depends on what waiting room Laura whispered to him?
The sex scene was ment to be awkard. In the car befor, they both knew that everything (also their love) gonna be different when they arrive in the new timeline/life. When they had sex, coop still remembered that he was coop. Diane became slowly Linda, who hadn't really had feelings for richard ( coop). That's why she didn't wanted to see his face.
