Does anyone have a theory as to why Cooper's face appeared over the scene as he met Naido/Diane? I assumed it meant he was watching the events we were seeing from somewhere else. But where (Fireman's screen??) and why? And his voice is abnormal when he says "we live inside a dream" but I don't believe it was reversed, what was going on? Let me know if this was addressed in another thread.
As I recall, his voice was slowed down. To me that says his realm is moving slower than ours - OR our realm is moving faster than his, as if he's watching the scene on fast-forward on a screen in front of him.
That's probably over-analyzing, as the slowed-down voice might just be a stylistic choice. But to me it still suggests someone passively watching on a monitor. The hugeness of the face relative to the scene in front of it also suggests someone watching on a screen. Overall, I think watching from the Fireman's screen is a great bet.
I'd have to rewatch (I've been saying that a lot), but I wonder if it's possible that was playing in the background when the Fireman was giving his clues. (Well, I'm all but sure it wasn't shown, or someone would've noticed by now. But I'd like to check if the scene was shot in such a way that Cooper could be half-watching a screen.) The very still, fixed, sort of grim expression on the face looks similar to when Cooper was sitting in the Red Room chair receiving the clues.
It disappears when he kisses Diane, but comes back when he says we live inside a dream.
I don't have a theory but here sre some observations:
The overlay of Cooper's face starts when he sees Naido and stops when he gets to the door in the basement of the Great Northern.
When Cooper first sees Naido he seems confused and worried. Afterwards he doesn't seem quite like the real Cooper, but maybe that is just an effect of the weirdness of the scene.
When Naido is transforming to Diane there is a sequence in the red room. The image is a bit reminiscent of when Laura and Sarah remove their faces, except in this case we see Diane inside the head and the head looks a bit like the head of the evolution of the arm.
At one point the room inside the Sheriff's station starts turning dark. Everyone is reacting to the darkness when the scene shifts to the basement of the Great Northern.
I don't see how this makes sense but this makes me think that maybe Naido is Judy. Most of the evifenve contradicts this but why does Mr C want to kill Naido? I assume that he does because Naido becomes afraid when he turns up at the station.
Cooper's face that appears is him, his spirit, in the Black Lodge. He could not leave until Mr. C, his body, returned. The Cooper in the sheriff station at that point is the doppelganger. When the doppelganger returns to the waiting room Cooper's spirit, his memories in the doppelganger and his body are all in the same place and he is whole again. It's at that point he actually leaves for the 1st time in 25 years.

Interesting theory but I'm not sure I follow. Are you saying you think Mr. C isn't the doppelgänger but actually Cooper's body possessed? And the one who acts like real Cooper is the doppelgänger? Except Mr. C has the eyes of a doppelgänger when his body is shown on fire in the red room.

Yes, that is what I mean. I give a more detailed explanation here:
It makes no sense that BOB is in a doppelganger. If he could leave the black lodge like that why would he ever need to possess anyone like he did with Leland? When Mr. C, Cooper's body, returns to the waiting room it is in flames but doesn't disappear and leave a seed like the others. As far as the eyes that may be what a body, doppelganger or not, looks like when no spirit inhabits it while in the waiting room. Bob is no longer in Mr. C at that point.
